Disney Abruptly Closes Tower of Terror Building on January 6

Disneyland Resort surprised guests by erecting construction barriers around a remnant of the defunct Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction. The walls appeared overnight, surrounding a former FastPass distribution kiosk at Disney California Adventure Park, launching speculation about what Disney plans to do with the last visible piece of the retired ride.

Construction Walls Appear Without Warning

Blue-gray construction barriers now stretch from Pym Test Kitchen to the corner of the Disney Animation building at Disney California Adventure Park, according to WDWNT. The walls completely surround the old Twilight Zone Tower of Terror FastPass kiosk, though some Art Deco design elements—including the distinctive red clock—remain visible above the barricades.

A small opening in the construction barriers allows Disney cast members to access the enclosed area when needed. Disneyland Resort installed the walls without prior announcement or explanation, leaving guests to wonder about the project's scope and timeline.

The walled-off structure sits in what's now known as Avengers Campus, near the Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction. Construction crews are simultaneously building two new rides and an additional restroom facility in other sections of Avengers Campus, raising questions about whether this project is connected to the larger expansion.

Tower of Terror's Controversial Transformation

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror closed at Disney California Adventure Park in early 2017, following a bombshell announcement from Walt Disney Imagineering in 2016. The company revealed plans to replace the beloved drop ride with Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, a Marvel Cinematic Universe reimagining that would fundamentally alter the experience.

Disneyland Resort fans reacted with skepticism and outrage. Many worried that incorporating a Marvel Studios property into the iconic attraction would destroy what made it special. The concerns proved unfounded—Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! became one of Disney California Adventure Park's most popular rides almost immediately.

Over eight years after its debut, the reimagined drop ride continues to generate some of the highest standby wait times at the Southern California Disney parks.

Last Traces of Original Attraction

When Disneyland Resort transformed the Tower of Terror into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, the company removed most evidence of the original Twilight Zone theming. However, the FastPass distribution kiosk survived relatively intact. Disneyland Resort eliminated all traces of the free line-skipping system when transitioning to the paid Lightning Lane service, but preserved the Art Deco architectural elements and main kiosk structure.

Project Details Remain Unknown

Disneyland Resort has offered no public comment about the construction walls or what they're hiding. The company hasn't revealed whether it intends to demolish the structure entirely or retheme it to match Avengers Campus.

Given the ongoing expansion work throughout Avengers Campus, Disney could be preparing the space for new guest facilities, retail locations, or additional queue areas for nearby attractions. Alternatively, the company might simply be removing the last remnant of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to create visual consistency throughout the land.
