Disney Removes History From Its Tower of Terror Attraction

Disney has quietly removed a nostalgic element from one of its Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attractions, and longtime fans aren’t happy.

For decades, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has terrified Disney Park guests worldwide. Originally debuting in Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in 1994, the ride’s eerie theming and sudden drop made it an instant classic. Since then, the spooky elevator adventure has been recreated across three other Disney parks: Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris, Tokyo DisneySea at Tokyo Disney Resort, and formerly Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort. In 2017, the attraction was rethemed to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!.

Though the Hollywood Tower Hotel at Disneyland Paris still features The Twilight Zone theme, it has undergone several updates in recent years. In 2019, the ride was renamed Twilight Zone Tower of Terror – A New Dimension of Chills and now includes three distinct storylines: The Malevolent Machine, The Shaft Creatures, and The 5th Dimension.

This year, another change was made—this time to the attraction’s pre-show. In the library scene, where guests gather before boarding the elevator, Disney has replaced the old vintage television screens with new flat-panel displays. Though subtle, the shift hasn’t gone unnoticed by longtime fans of the ride’s retro atmosphere.

On X (formerly Twitter), @DLPReport shared a look at the change:

🔧 At Tower of Terror, the Library tv screens were replaced with more modern technology.

Another user, @Themountainkin1, posted side-by-side videos comparing the old CRT-style monitors with the new versions:

La télévision cathodique du préshow de la Tour de la Terreur a été remplacée par un écran plat🫤…

Ce changement est définitif. Ça a déjà été fait pour la TOT WDW. On perd l’effet de distorsion de l’image, dû à la courbure de l’écran, et la qualité d’époque. Certes un petit détail, mais un détail qui apportait de l’authenticité, pour laquelle WDI est connu, à la scène. AVANT:

Disney has not acknowledged the change, but it’s not unusual for the company to avoid commenting on more minor ride modifications, especially when the storyline or major effects are left untouched. Still, to fans who hold the original Tower of Terror in high regard, even a seemingly minor update can feel like a loss.
