Universal Islands of Adventure guests ran into an unexpected problem Wednesday morning, and it involved an attraction many people make a priority before they even enter the park.
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure was unavailable as September 16 got underway. The situation immediately drew attention because Hagrid’s remains one of the biggest attractions at Universal Orlando Resort.
Ride downtime happens at theme parks, particularly with complicated attractions. A delayed opening does not automatically point to a serious problem. However, this particular delay comes at an interesting time for Islands of Adventure.
Another major attraction has already been offline for weeks, and Universal recently confirmed that repairs are necessary.
For now, there are plenty of eyes on what happens with Hagrid’s next.
Hagrid’s Is More Than Another Roller Coaster
Since opening in 2019, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure has become a major draw inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade.
The attraction takes guests into the Forbidden Forest aboard motorcycles and sidecars, blending roller coaster thrills with a detailed Wizarding World story.
Instead of building the entire experience around screens, Universal sends riders through indoor and outdoor sections filled with physical scenery and creatures. Guests encounter Fluffy, Cornish Pixies, and a Blast-Ended Skrewt during the adventure.
Then there are the coaster elements themselves.
Hagrid’s includes several launches, a backward portion, and an unexpected drop. Those elements have helped set it apart from more traditional roller coasters and made it a priority for many Islands of Adventure visitors.
That popularity can also lead to lengthy waits, which makes the start of the operating day particularly important.

An Unusual Message Appeared This Morning
Guests checking on Hagrid’s September 16 quickly discovered that the attraction was not operating.
One fan posted about the situation on Reddit after noticing the problem on Wednesday morning.
According to the report, the Universal Orlando Resort app initially displayed “closed today” for Hagrid’s. Universal later changed that status to “delayed.”
The distinction matters.
Seeing “closed today” gives guests little reason to expect a ride will become available later. A delayed status leaves considerably more room for the attraction to open once Universal eventually addresses whatever is preventing operations from beginning.
Independent wait-time tracking also showed Hagrid’s closed during the morning.
For guests already inside Islands of Adventure, however, the wording change did not immediately alter the situation. Hagrid’s still wasn't available.

Early Arrivals Lost a Valuable Opportunity
The delay became especially important because Early Park Admission started at Islands of Adventure at 8 a.m. on September 16.
Eligible guests can use Early Park Admission to access select experiences before the regular park crowd arrives, depending on the day's schedule. That can make the perk particularly useful when trying to experience a popular attraction.
Hagrid’s remained delayed later Wednesday morning, taking away that opportunity for guests who had planned their morning around the coaster.
Of course, that does not mean an extended closure is coming.
Complicated theme park attractions occasionally experience delayed openings, and Hagrid’s has experienced downtime in the past. Universal could still resolve Wednesday's issue and begin operating the coaster later in the day.
What makes this delay more noticeable is what has already happened elsewhere in the park.

Another Major Attraction Is Already Missing
Skull Island: Reign of Kong has remained unavailable since late August.
Universal has since explained that closure. According to the company, the enormous King Kong animatronic was damaged while undergoing routine maintenance.
The figure is now undergoing repairs, and Universal has not announced when the attraction will reopen.
That has left Reign of Kong offline for weeks, turning what guests initially saw as an unexplained closure into a much longer maintenance situation.
With that attraction already unavailable, another major ride failing to open naturally attracts more attention.

Hagrid’s Situation Remains Very Different
There is currently nothing indicating Hagrid’s delay involves the kind of damage affecting Reign of Kong.
Universal has not announced an extended shutdown for Hagrid’s, either.
In fact, the app changing the attraction from “closed today” to “delayed” leaves open the possibility that Universal could restore operations on Wednesday.
Until that happens, guests will have to continue monitoring the Universal Orlando Resort app for updates.
If Hagrid’s remains unavailable beyond September 16, attention will naturally turn toward the days ahead. For now, however, this remains a delayed opening rather than a confirmed extended closure.
That distinction is important.
Islands of Adventure already has one significant attraction sitting offline without a reopening date. Guests will now be hoping Hagrid’s absence proves much shorter and that motorcycles and sidecars are racing through the Forbidden Forest again soon.
