Universal Orlando Resort has never been shy about evolving its parks. Over the years, entire areas have been transformed to make room for new franchises, groundbreaking attractions, and larger experiences designed to keep guests coming back. Now, a newly spotted construction filing has sparked speculation that another major transformation could be on the horizon at Islands of Adventure.
This time, the focus is on one of the park’s most mysterious and historic lands: The Lost Continent.
For longtime Universal fans, the area has always been one of the most atmospheric sections of the park. When Islands of Adventure opened in 1999, the land stood as a tribute to ancient myths, forgotten civilizations, and larger-than-life legends. Massive stone statues, ancient ruins, and winding pathways gave guests the feeling that they were exploring the remains of a long-lost world.

But in recent years, the land has slowly faded from the spotlight.
Now, a new permit filing suggests something bigger may be about to happen.
A New Permit Raises Questions
A recently filed Notice of Commencement connected to Islands of Adventure has caught the attention of theme park watchers. While construction permits are common around the resort, the firm listed on this document specializes in environmental monitoring.
Companies like this are typically brought in to ensure that demolition work or large-scale construction projects do not allow harmful materials to impact nearby waterways or surrounding land.
That detail alone has led some fans to believe the permit could be connected to demolition activity.
Specifically, the permit may relate to the remaining portion of The Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure.
Universal has not confirmed what the permit is tied to, and it’s important to remember that construction paperwork often covers a wide range of potential projects. Still, longtime observers know that some of the resort’s biggest changes began with similar filings long before official announcements were made.
Because of that, speculation is now spreading quickly among theme park fans.
The Lost Continent Has Been Shrinking for Years
To understand why this permit has generated so much conversation, it helps to look at how much the Lost Continent has already changed over time.
When Islands of Adventure first opened, the land was one of its largest themed areas. It included elaborate attractions, dining locations, shops, and immersive storytelling that tied together ancient mythology with fantasy adventure.
That changed dramatically in 2010.
When The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade opened, a large section of the Lost Continent was transformed into the home of Hogwarts Castle and the groundbreaking Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey attraction. The expansion helped launch Universal Orlando into a new era of popularity.
However, it also left the remaining section of Lost Continent noticeably smaller.
Over the following years, the land lost additional experiences. The elaborate Poseidon’s Fury walkthrough attraction eventually closed permanently in 2023 after years of declining attendance and operational challenges.
Today, only a handful of restaurants, pathways, and themed spaces remain.
Because of that, many fans have long suspected the land might eventually be replaced entirely.

A New Franchise Could Move In
Whenever rumors about the future of the Lost Continent surface, one particular idea always seems to rise to the top: Pokémon.
The global franchise has been linked to Universal Orlando speculation for years. Universal already works closely with Nintendo, bringing characters from the gaming giant into its parks through Super Nintendo World.
Because Pokémon remains one of the most recognizable entertainment brands in the world, fans have often wondered whether it could eventually receive its own land at Universal.
However, it’s important to note that Universal has never officially announced any Pokémon plans for Orlando.
Right now, the idea remains firmly in the rumor category.
Other Possibilities Exist
Pokémon might dominate fan discussions, but Universal has many other intellectual properties it could bring into Islands of Adventure.
The company continues expanding its partnership with Nintendo, meaning additional gaming franchises could potentially appear in Orlando in the future. DreamWorks Animation properties are also possibilities, especially as Universal leans more heavily into its film and animation brands across its parks.
Another option would be creating something completely original.
After all, the Lost Continent itself wasn’t based on a movie or existing franchise when it opened. Instead, it relied on immersive design and detailed storytelling to transport guests to a mythical world.
Whatever replaces the land would likely follow Universal’s current strategy of building large, highly immersive environments centered around headline attractions.
A Park That Continues to Evolve
Islands of Adventure has gone through several dramatic changes since it first opened in 1999.
The arrival of Harry Potter fundamentally reshaped the park, turning it into one of the most visited theme parks in the world. More recently, Universal Orlando expanded again with the opening of Epic Universe in 2025, bringing entirely new themed lands to the resort.
Because of that, continued changes inside Islands of Adventure feel almost inevitable.
If the current permit does turn out to be tied to demolition work, it could mark the final chapter for the Lost Continent as fans know it today.
For those who remember exploring the mysterious ruins and mythological statues of the land in its early years, that possibility may feel bittersweet.
At the same time, Universal’s history shows that when one land disappears, something even bigger often takes its place.
And if rumors about a new franchise ever become reality, the next era of Islands of Adventure could be just beginning.
