Appropriate for a Family Theme Park? Mom’s Shirt Sparks Debate

A theme park guest has ignited a social media debate over what’s considered appropriate attire at family-friendly theme parks. The controversy began after the mother claimed she was forced to surrender her $42 shirt at Universal Orlando Resort due to a dress code violation.

The guest, who shared her story on TikTok under the username @mommashive, said she attempted to enter the park wearing a CHNGE brand shirt that read, “Women Don’t Owe You Shit.” Universal Orlando Resort security deemed the shirt inappropriate and in violation of the resort’s dress code, which prohibits clothing with “offensive” language.

Instead of allowing the guest to cover the shirt with a jacket, security reportedly gave her the choice to surrender it or return to her hotel to change. The guest decided to give up the shirt, explaining, “I have 3 kids and they would SCREAM if we had to leave—did what had to be done.”

Theme Park Dress Code Trends

While Universal Orlando Resort’s dress code hasn’t received as much attention as Walt Disney World Resort’s, it has clear rules about offensive clothing. The resort prohibits attire with “offensive language or content” or anything “likely to incite a disturbance.”

Walt Disney World Resort, Universal’s nearby competitor, faced widespread dress code controversies in 2022 when a TikTok trend encouraged guests to violate Disney’s policies to receive free shirts. Disney ultimately cracked down on the trend, tightening its enforcement of dress code violations and its policy on complimentary attire.

Social Media Weighs In

The incident has sparked divided reactions online, with some applauding Universal Orlando Resort for enforcing family-friendly policies and others questioning whether the shirt was truly inappropriate.

One commenter supported the resort’s decision, writing, “The shirt had a curse word on it. Anyone that thinks that’s okay in public is nuts.”

“I kind of agree with universal,” said another. “It’s a kid place. It’s just not necessary as cool as a shirt as it is. Time and place.”

Others took the guest’s side, arguing that the enforcement went too far. “It’s a curse word,” one TikTok user responded. “Who cares like it’s not that offensive.”

Freedom of speech violated.. lawsuit time!!!” another wrote.
