Universal Studios Great Britain Could Host ‘Flintstones’-Themed Land

The upcoming Universal Studios Great Britain has set the rumor mill ablaze with speculation about which blockbuster franchises will appear. Jurassic World, Harry Potter, James Bond, and Paddington have all been floated as possibilities, but one surprising contender could give the park a non-Jurassic prehistoric twist: The Flintstones.

At first glance, a Bedrock-themed land might sound unlikely. Hanna-Barbera’s “modern Stone Age family” hasn’t been a major player in pop culture since the 1990s, with the live-action adaptation The Flintstones (1994) and its prequel Viva Rock Vegas (2000). Yet with a new 3D animated film reportedly in the works from the director of 2023’s smash hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the franchise could be primed for a major comeback.

But if Universal needs a model for how Bedrock could work in a park setting, it should look no further than Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. The indoor mega-park features a sprawling Flintstones land, complete with themed dining, colorful storefronts, and the standout attraction Bedrock River Adventure.

The log flume ride sends guests drifting past elaborate Stone Age scenes populated with animatronic versions of Fred, Wilma, Barney, and the rest of the gang. It’s a true showcase of how immersive the IP can be — a reminder that if Warner Bros. can pull it off, Universal could push it even further.

Universal, of course, has had some experience with the franchise: The Flintstones Show, a live musical production, ran at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Panasonic Theater from 1994 to 1997. But Bedrock has never claimed a permanent Universal home.

That’s why Universal Studios Great Britain could be the perfect place. A land themed around Bedrock would offer a lighter alternative to the darker, dino-centric thrills of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World attractions like VelociCoaster or Canopy Flyer. Instead, families could enjoy comedy-driven dark rides, prehistoric coasters, and stone-age dining — all in a setting bursting with vibrant cartoon charm.

With Universal’s Bedford resort set to open in 2031 as its most advanced park yet, there’s no better time to bring Bedrock back to life.
