An outlet slammed the director of an upcoming Star Wars movie for being a “misandrist” and “lunatic” after the former’s recent comments.

Disney has come under fire for many of its decisions in the recent past. But now, they’re being criticized for a movie and series whose script hasn’t even been penned yet. When a recent snippet of an interview with director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the director of the upcoming trilogy sequel featuring Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey Skywalker, went viral, one outlet shared it, commenting that the “movie is destined to be Disney’s biggest flop yet.”

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Shares Her View on the Changing Cinema Landscape and Her Role Within It

Star Wars director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has said on her upcoming project that, “it’s about time” a woman shaped a Star Wars film after the beloved sci-fi franchise has gone close to half a century with films directed only by men.

In a recent interview, Star Wars’s first female director, Obaid-Chinoy answered the question, “What is the balance between activating a force for change but also trying to permeate that patriarchy, that power structure? And is that a calculation of your art?”

Obaid-Chinoy responded, “Oh, absolutely. I like to make men uncomfortable. I enjoy making men uncomfortable. You know it’s important to be able to look into the eyes of a man and say ‘I am here’ and recognize that…it’s only when [men] are uncomfortable and shifty, when [men] have to have difficult conversations, you will look in the mirror and perhaps not like the reflection.”

Obaid-Chinoy’s comments were made in the context of a catalyst for change, and she shared in this case perhaps the discomfort will allow men to change their attitude about patriarchy.

However, while Obaid-Chinoy is excited about her opportunity, some are not so much.

Needless to say, many did not take kindly to her comments. Outlet Christian 360 News shared, “Here’s the #misandrist lunatic director of the next Star Wars film saying that her goal is to ‘make men uncomfortable.’ This movie is destined to be Disney’s biggest flop yet. There is a total of four disoriented women on stage.”

And the outlet wasn’t the only one. Another fan also took to X to share their frustrations about this. The fan commented, “Yeah, that explains why Star Wars sucks in this Era. I came across news last night Disney is partnered with the ‘WEF’, making it even s—–. It’s not what it used to be, even with how they’re strongly insisting ‘all males are trash’ nonsense.”

Of course, at the same time, some fans stood up for Disney and defended the Mouse House as well—or, more precisely, they defended the Star Wars franchise.

One commented, “Oh my god this movie doesn’t have a script yet and it’s already on Fox News for being too woke. This is so stupid and embarrassing. Disney and Lucasfilm better be f—— ready to protect their cast and crew this time.”

Obaid-Chinoy, for her part, is incredibly excited to head the series.

“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special,” Obaid-Chinoy told CNN. “We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”
