Recent rumors are swirling online that Disney will soon be releasing a series centering Darth Vader, the fan-favorite villain from Star Wars.

Darth Vader is one of the most iconic characters of all time and has flooded every nook and cranny of the internet with his presence. The famous twist villain has been the inspiration behind many memes and remains one of the most beloved pop culture icons of all time.

His recent “reappearance” in Disney+’s  Ahsoka has had fans equal parts excited and frustrated: excited because Darth Vader is back!  And frustrated because fans don’t always agree with how his character is treated in the show. This said, a recent rumor has fans looking forward to the possibility of a Darth Vader series coming up in the future.

Is a Darth Vader Series Coming to Disney+?

Recently, some fans took to social media to share that the rumor mill was hard at work again, although this time, with news that had many on the edge of their seats excited.

Fan page All Things STAR WARS shared, “An insider online has hinted that prior to the beginning of the strike action taken by the writer’s/actor’s unions…a ‘VADER’ limited series was in early development at ‘Disney’ and ‘LucasFilm.’” The rumor also explains the series would likely be set after the events of the Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series.

The post also took the time to highlight Hayden Christensen’s return to the role of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and noted that Disney could have been prepping to give the character his own show—it’s something that fans are certainly excited about.

What Do We Know So Far?

Officially, unfortunately, not much. Even if  Disney had planned to announce the news sometime this year, the reality is that after the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike, even previously announced movies and television shows have been delayed due to the strike—for example, Disney’s Snow White has been pushed to a March 2025 release (although truth be told, that one could well have to do with damage control on Disney’s part as well).

However, when it comes to this show, Disney has seen that the Star Wars fanbase is eager for good, new content, and a villain as loved as Darth Vader could be the perfect central figure for this kind of story.

Is It Likely This Rumor of a Darth Vader Series is True?

It’s hard to tell.

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently took the time to explain that Disney was doubling down on the change in creative strategy for working on new content, and at the same time, interim CFO Kevin Lansberry mentioned during the November 8 earnings call that movies had historically been a better bet than series, leading us to believe perhaps Disney will be focusing more on that kind of content.

Will Disney ever make a Darth Vader movie?

So, is it possible that a movie is in the works instead of a series? Some believe it’s unlikely. At the beginning of the year, it appeared that spinoff movies had been forced off the table, and as a consequence, a Star Wars spinoff was improbable.

Now, however, perhaps it’s more possible than not.

But the reality is that Disney is focusing on cleaning up its act and creative strategy, so what seems certain is that the company will not spend the money on the series without making sure it’s really worth the investment.

Would the Darth Vader series be released in 2024?

At the moment, there is no news on when this series or movie will be released and no official confirmation of its existence. However, when it comes to Darth Vader and upcoming 2024 announcements, all we have confirmed is a “Darth Vader and Son” wall calendar for 2024.

The calendar “features a year full of STAR WARS family hijinks and life lessons” and is based on the New York Times bestselling series Darth Vader and Son. It also includes exclusive artwork of Darth Vader as he rules the Galactic Empire while keeping an eye on his rebellious kids, Luke Skywalker and Leia Skywalker.
