It was recently revealed that Star Wars could have once featured a movie surrounding a fan-favorite villain, but it was canceled.
Star Wars is one of the most beloved franchises that the Walt Disney Company owns, although admittedly, all of Disney’s properties are popular and fairly lucrative for the Mouse House. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, fans were on the fence about the buy because they weren’t certain if Disney would be able to continue the incredible legacy the Mouse House left.
While there have been mixed reviews about some of the Star Wars movies that have come out recently, the Mouse House has certainly embraced the IP, introducing Galaxy’s Edge to both domestic Disney Parks. This said, irrespective of how fans feel about the Disney-Lucasfilm combination, news recently came to light that shocked fans.

Guillermo Del Toro Confirms A Now Axed Jabba the Hutt Movie
The Shape of Water filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro confirmed that Disney, in fact, axed a movie about the fan-favorite villain, Jabba the Hutt.
The critically acclaimed director continued, “We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy. We were doing a lot of stuff, and then — it’s not my property, it’s not my money. It’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away.”
Del Toro also added the project was canceled for “unexplained reasons.” He shared, “Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not. I always turn to my team and say, ‘Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world, we designed great stuff, we learned.”
Noting, “So, you can never be ungrateful with life. Whatever life sends you, there’s something to be learned from it. So I trust the universe.”

Who is Jabba the Hutt?
Jabba the Hutt, appropriately known as Jabba Desilijic Tiure, is one of the major antagonists in Star Wars. He is a fat, slug-like alien gangster and the archenemy of Han Solo and Leia Organa. Jabba the Hutt is also one of the most successful crime lords in the galaxy, and he’s a member of the Hutt Clan and the Grand Hutt Council.
He was eventually killed by Princess Leia Organa when she used the chain that once bound her when she was his slave girl to strangle him. His body was consumed by the flames that exploded from his sail barge as the Rebels raced for freedom.
More on Star Wars
What began with a 1977 film by George Lucas has now become a worldwide phenomenon: Star Wars is one of the most successful and popular media franchises in the world today. The story is set “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” where humans and aliens lived together with robots, and the main storyline centers around the Skywalker family.
The story follows each generation of the Force-sensitive Skywalker family and their struggle against the authoritarian politician Palpatine, who is secretly an evil Sith Lord.
The first three films were the original trilogy. They followed Luke Skywalker and Leia Skywalker as they joined forces with Han Solo and the Rebel Alliance against Darth Vader, an evil Sith lord, Palpatine, an authoritarian antagonist, and the Empire.
The prequel trilogy was released after. This trilogy focuses on Palpatine’s rise to power and Anakin Skywalker’s training as a Jedi before he fell to the dark side as Darth Vader due to Palpatine’s machinations, including Anakin’s fear of losing his wife, Padmé Amidala.
The last three movies in the Skywalker saga—the sequel trilogy—featured Kylo Ren (Ben Solo)—Leia and Han’s son and Luke’s former Jedi apprentice—who fell to the dark side and seeks to rule the galaxy with Rey, Palpatine’s granddaughter and Luke and Leia’s last Jedi apprentice.
While centered around the Skywalker family, the series also gave fans many beloved characters like Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the bounty hunter Boba Fett, and more. Disney has also developed the franchise to include brand-new television shows, including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and more.
