Video: Behind the Scenes Look at Walt Disney World Railroad Testing

The Walt Disney World Railroad in Magic Kingdom Park has remained closed while construction moves ahead on the new TRON Lightcycle / Run attraction coming to Tomorrowland, but Cast Members are still working on the railroad behind the scenes. Disney just shared a backstage look at how each classic locomotive prepares for testing (and soon for Guests to ride!)

The trains Guests see in Disney’s Magic Kingdom are original to the early 20th century, with most of them being constructed in the early 1920s. The trains were not in great shape when Walt Disney Company purchased them, so before they arrived in the park they had to be fully restored and outfitted to carry Guests.

Since the trains are authentic pieces of history from another time, the Cast Members who work on them are required to operate them just how they would have run back in the 20s. In the video, Cast Member Lou who works in the Walt Disney World maintenance department on the railroad gives a closeup look at how the boilers for the trains are started each day before the attraction opens to Guests.

The Walt Disney World Railroad is a classic Magic Kingdom theme park attraction and one that truly honors Walt Disney‘s love of trains (that started with his own Carolwood Pacific Railroad). When operating, it takes Guests around the perimeter of the park with stops to hop on or off at a train station located by the entrance to Main Street USA, Frontierland near Splash Mountain, and Fantasyland by Storybook Circus.

The ride is a true Disney Park classic that began in California with the Disneyland Railroad and has since been replicated (with different original antique trains) in Disney parks around the world . While Disney has not yet announced an opening date for the Walt Disney World Railroad, sharing a video of the attraction testing is certainly a good sign, so we hope to be back with more news on each locomotive soon and departing for a ride around Magic Kingdom Park from the Main Street Station ourselves very soon!
