Disneyland Resort is gearing up for a major moment in its 70th anniversary celebrations with a highly anticipated debut: the first-ever audio-animatronic of Walt Disney, the visionary behind Mickey Mouse. On July 17, the new attraction, “Walt Disney – A Magical Life,” will open at the Main Street Opera House, marking a significant tribute to the man who made Disneyland Park possible.

For years, Walt Disney has remained a central figure in the park’s legacy, but this is the first time Imagineering has chosen to depict him in an audio-animatronic form. Disney made the announcement at D23 Expo 2024, revealing plans to honor Walt’s fascination with robotic figures—a passion that inspired the creation of audio-animatronic technology, now a hallmark of the Disney parks. However, this milestone has been met with a range of reactions, particularly from those who feel this depiction does not honor Walt’s legacy in the way it was intended.
While some fans are overjoyed by the chance to see a robotic version of Walt Disney, others, especially in his family, have raised concerns. Joanna Miller, Walt’s granddaughter, has been vocal about her opposition to the animatronic, arguing that the depiction doesn’t do justice to her grandfather’s legacy. After seeing the animatronic for herself, Miller reportedly spoke with Disney CEO Bob Iger and asked him to reconsider the decision.

“I strongly feel the last two minutes with the robot will do much more harm than good to Grampa’s legacy,” Miller said. “They will remember the robot, and not the man.”
Miller further shared that Walt had once expressed that he never wanted to be turned into a robot, though no one has been able to confirm her claim.
“In all our research, we never found any documentation of Walt saying that,” said Imagineering’s Jeff Shaver-Moskowitz in response to Miller’s comments. “It’s anecdotal, and we can’t confirm private conversations.”

Disney, however, has worked closely with the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, founded by Walt’s daughter Diane Disney Miller and his grandson, Walter E.D. Miller, in creating the animatronic. Additionally, Walt’s grandnephew, Roy P. Disney, has expressed his support for the project, attending the announcement at D23 Expo 2024.
Despite the family controversy, Disneyland Resort is moving forward with the debut of “Walt Disney – A Magical Life,” which is set to open in just three days. On Monday, theme park journalist @ScottGustin on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared a sneak peek of the animatronic, giving fans a first look at the portrayal of Walt standing up from his desk in the upcoming show.

@fortheloveofET strongly disagreed:
The execution is horrible. It's pretty bad taste, especially when he looks and sounds nothing like Walt.

@oldmangamess voiced similar concerns, writing:
This looks awful and I can’t even imagine how distraught Walt’s family seeing his likeness screwed up this badly.

With just three days left until the big reveal, Imagineering is likely finalizing adjustments to lighting, makeup, and other effects to perfect the animatronic’s debut.

“Walt Disney – A Magical Life” will temporarily replace Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln, but will alternate performances with the original show after its initial run. Guests who want to experience this groundbreaking addition must register for a Virtual Queue on the Disneyland Resort app. Virtual Queue registrations open at 7:00 a.m. for single-park ticket holders with Disneyland Park reservations or Park Hopper guests with reservations at either park, and at noon for guests inside Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park (with Park Hopper tickets).
