Shots fired! In an article entitled “Parents Who Raised Kids On Disney Movies About Rebelling Against Parents Not Sure Why Kids Are Rebelling Against Their Parents,” the satirical website known as Babylon Bee has just taken aim at Disney fans and the parents who inexplicably struggle to raise them.
For many people, Disney movies were standard fare in their childhood homes. In fact, some parents have even gone so far as to name their children after Disney characters from said animated movies (including, possibly, Serena Williams).
However, there is a large side effect that has begun to rear its ugly-but-understandable head in Disney-loving families — and Babylon Bee has hit the nail on the head in regards to that!
Many animated Disney movies are all about chasing one’s dreams and daring to be different (especially when it comes to Disney princesses). Those divergences from the main character’s societal norms also usually involve defying the will of their parents.
Ariel goes against King Triton’s orders and follows her Little Mermaid dreams; Belle refuses to try to fit in within her “provincial town” and ignores authoritative figures like Gaston in her Disney princess movie; Pocahontas defies Chief Powhatan to meet John Smith; Merida risks an all-out war in order to avoid fulfilling her mother’s wishes…the list goes on.
This certainly rings true for today’s youth, who are more and more focused on following their dreams and following their hearts without taking the paths that their parents or grandparents took.
Traditional 9 to 5 jobs and working in the same field until retirement (with no free time other than weekends and the occasional week-long vacation) has started to fall to the wayside (much like traditional heterosexual marriage) as young people strive to blaze their own trails — and Disney could have played a sneaky role in this progression!
Babylon Bee has certainly noticed this, as well, and introduced a fake couple in the satirical article mentioned above. In the article, “local parents Dave and Stacey Martin, who raised their daughter on Disney movies that glamorized rebelling against parents, are flabbergasted to see their teenage daughter now rebelling against her parents.”
“‘I just don’t get it,'” Dave Martin allegedly said in an interview. “‘Every movie and song she listened to growing up featured positive messages about listening to her heart, and now she won’t listen to me! It’s so weird!'”
Did you notice how many rebellious teenagers and youngsters were featured in Disney movies (especially Disney princess movies) when you were watching them as a child? Are you a parent who shows Disney movies to your children, and worries about this kind of rebellion being encouraged?
