It’s been nearly ten years since Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde sprinted onto the big screen and into our hearts with Zootopia. After almost a decade of waiting, Walt Disney Animation Studios officially released their YouTube channel’s first teaser trailer for Zootopia 2. The sequel is finally real, and fans have plenty to unpack.
The trailer may be short on plot, but it’s big on atmosphere. With just over a minute of footage, Disney gives us a fast-paced glimpse at what’s to come: quick cuts of action, suspenseful music, and a strong sense of mystery that sets the tone for a high-stakes new chapter. And yes, it’s looking like one of the most visually ambitious Disney films to date.

A Hooded Villain, a Blue Snake, and Familiar Faces
Though it doesn’t reveal much about the story, the Zootopia 2 trailer introduces several intriguing new characters, including a hooded figure who seems to be this installment’s central villain. Their identity remains a mystery, but the design and framing clearly mark them as a serious threat.
Another major surprise? A blue snake named Gary, who’s shaping up to be one of the standout new characters in Zootopia 2. Visually, Gary is modeled after a Sunda Island pit viper, with cerulean blue scales, bulbous yellow eyes with vertical slit pupils, and a wide jaw featuring a single, prominent fang on the right side. But looks are just the beginning, Gary is actually a wanted criminal, and Judy and Nick must go undercover in Marsh Market to track him down.
Gary is voiced by Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan, bringing an extra layer of charm and unpredictability to the role. According to director Jared Bush, Gary is his “favorite character of the new movie.” He shared that Gary is “an unexpected addition to the world of Zootopia, as there were no reptiles in the first film. This time around, there are, and he’s the one we spend the most time with.”
Bush didn’t want to spoil anything, but hinted, “Gary is absolutely delightful, and I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.”
It’s clear that Gary isn’t just a cool design; he’s a major part of the story, and one that fans will likely be talking about long after the credits roll.
Amid the new additions, several fan-favorite characters also triumphantly return. Gazelle, Finnick, and Mr. Big all appear in the trailer, offering reassurance that the heart of the original cast remains fully intact.
A Bigger, Wilder Zootopia
One thing the trailer makes crystal clear? This sequel is taking us far beyond the city center.
In rapid-fire cuts, we jump from sun-drenched deserts to snow-covered landscapes, through dense city blocks, and even underwater locales. These dramatic shifts hint at a far-reaching adventure that pushes the boundaries of Zootopia’s already diverse world. It’s bold, cinematic, and it feels like the stakes and the scope are even higher this time.
Among the new locations is Marsh Market, a foggy, mysterious district introduced as home to semi-aquatic mammals and creatures not seen in the original film. It feels totally unfamiliar, even to seasoned officers like Judy and Nick. The murky atmosphere, shady alleys, and slippery characters give the impression that Zootopia still has many layers left to uncover.
What’s the Story Behind Zootopia 2?
From Walt Disney Animation Studios, Zootopia 2 reunites Jared Bush, the Oscar-winning director of Encanto and Moana, for a brand-new adventure set to hit theaters on November 26.
This time, Detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde must go undercover in Marsh Market, a fog-covered, shadowy corner of Zootopia not seen in the original. Their mission? To track a mysterious reptile at the center of a case that could unravel the city’s delicate harmony.
The mystery unfolds quickly, hinting at twists, new alliances, and fresh corners of the animal world that will test Judy and Nick like never before.
Zootopia Magic Coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom
As excitement for the sequel builds, Disney’s Animal Kingdom prepares to bring a little more hustle to the park this winter.
Set to debut at the Tree of Life Theater, Zootopia: Better Zoogether is a brand-new stage show that promises state-of-the-art projections, original music, and a story filled with energy and heart, right in sync with the film’s theatrical release.
And while Disney hasn’t confirmed which characters might appear in person, fans are hopeful that Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde will return to the parks for meet-and-greets, perhaps even donning updated outfits inspired by the sequel.
