Disney World Confirms Imminent Closure of Controversial Attraction

Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed the imminent closure of one of its most controversial attractions, ending a decades-long run inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Beginning March 17, 2025, the Tree of Life will no longer house the opening-day experience that has delighted—and terrified—guests since 1998.

The Final Curtain Call for It’s Tough to Be a Bug!

Sunday, March 16, 2025, marks the final day of operation for It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, the 3D film and stage show that has called the Tree of Life home since Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park opened. The closure comes as Disney prepares to replace the attraction with a brand-new experience themed to Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia (2016).

Originally announced during Destination D23 in 2023, the upcoming “Zootopia: Better Zoogether!” attraction will take over the Tree of Life theater, ushering in a new era for the park’s iconic centerpiece. This move also aligns with the release of Zootopia 2 (2025), slated to hit theaters on November 26.

A Zootopian Tree of Life Takeover

While few details have been released, Disney has offered a sneak peek into what guests can expect from the Zootopia-themed 3D attraction. Zootopia: Better Zoogether! will feature an original song performed by Ginnifer Goodwin, the voice of Judy Hopps. Concept art suggests it will include a highly detailed Clawhauser audio-animatronic, similar to what is seen in Zootopia: Hot Pursuit at Shanghai Disneyland.

Though the exact opening date for Zootopia: Better Zoogether! has not been confirmed, Disney has teased that the attraction is expected to debut later this year, potentially aligning with the theatrical premiere of the sequel film.

The Legacy of It's Tough To Be A Bug!

It’s Tough to Be a Bug! holds a unique place in the memories of countless Walt Disney World Resort guests. Known for its intense 4D effects and creepy-crawly theatrics, the attraction inspired a wide range of reactions, from laughter to outright terror.

First opening on April 22, 1998, It’s Tough to Be a Bug! actually pre-dated the release of Pixar’s A Bug’s Life (1998). The attraction combined a 3D movie, live effects, and audio-animatronics to immerse guests in the world of insects.

Walt Disney World Resort offered this official description in the attraction’s final days:

Become an honorary insect as you take your seat in the theater hidden at the base of the Tree of Life and don a pair of “bug eye” glasses. Enjoy a delightful 3D movie and live show hosted by Flik, the loveable ant from A Bug’s Life, and learn how insects survive in the wild.

Bug Out!

During the show, dodge flying quills from a tarantula, feel a harmless spray from a soldier termite and sniff the putrid “defense stench” from a stink bug.

When Hopper—the grasshopper villain from A Bug’s Life—unexpectedly shows up, the theater goes bug-wild!

The moral of the story? It really is tough to be a bug. With dazzling 3D movie effects, Audio-Animatronics figures and in-theater 4D surprises, this is one show you’ll be buzzing about for a long time.

Disneyland Resort also featured its own version of the show inside A Bug’s Land at Disney California Adventure Park. That version closed in 2018, along with the rest of A Bug’s Land, to make way for Avengers Campus.
