Few franchises have maintained a grip on pop culture quite like Harry Potter. Decades after the first book hit shelves, the wizarding world continues to thrive across books, films, theme parks, and gaming.
The success of Hogwarts Legacy only reinforced the franchise’s staying power, proving there’s still a massive audience eager to explore the magical universe. Yet, despite this overwhelming popularity, not every project moves forward. One highly anticipated expansion has now been scrapped, with Warner Bros. Discovery citing cost concerns.

The Ever-Growing Wizarding World
Harry Potter has long been a priority for Warner Bros. Discovery, even as the franchise navigates controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling.
Yet, the studio remains committed to the brand, currently developing an HBO television reboot and other projects designed to keep the wizarding world relevant for a new generation.
Beyond film and television, the franchise continues to expand in other media. Universal Orlando Resort is preparing to open its third Harry Potter-themed land at Epic Universe next year, and a new Audible adaptation is in development. But one project that had been widely expected—an expansion for Hogwarts Legacy—will no longer see the light of day.
Warner Bros. Cancels ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ Expansion
One of the most successful modern Harry Potter projects has been Hogwarts Legacy, the 2023 open-world video game that transported players to a version of Hogwarts set in the 1800s. Despite calls for a boycott due to Rowling’s views, the game went on to sell over 30 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.
The game allowed players to craft their own Hogwarts student, explore an expansive magical world, and uncover hidden lore outside of the main book series. From learning spells and flying broomsticks to battling dark wizards, Hogwarts Legacy balanced nostalgia with fresh storytelling, making it a hit among longtime fans and newcomers alike.

An expansion was widely expected, with reports suggesting a “Definitive Edition” that would bundle the base game with new storylines. But according to Bloomberg, Warner Bros. Discovery has now scrapped the project, concluding that the additional content “was not substantial enough to justify the price being considered.”
Fans had been hoping for new locations, additional spells, or even a multiplayer mode. Instead, Warner Bros. appears to be shifting its gaming strategy entirely—starting with a renewed focus on its biggest franchises.
Warner Bros. Games Faces Setbacks
The cancellation of Hogwarts Legacy’s expansion comes at a difficult time for Warner Bros.’ gaming division. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the company’s long-awaited DC Comics game, was met with poor reviews and underwhelming sales. The backlash centered around its always-online format and repetitive gameplay, and the title’s failure ultimately led to layoffs at developer Rocksteady Studios.
In response to these struggles, Warner Bros. Discovery has started restructuring its video game approach. A planned Wonder Woman game was canceled, and three studios were shut down. Going forward, the company has stated it will focus on its most bankable properties—including Harry Potter, DC, Game of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat.

While the Hogwarts Legacy expansion is no longer happening, the wizarding world is far from disappearing from the gaming space. A full-fledged sequel remains in development, though details on its setting or storyline remain under wraps.
Some fans speculate it could be set in the same 1800s era, while others (it’s us, we’re others) hope for a post-Cursed Child storyline. Warner Bros. has also hinted that elements of Hogwarts Legacy may be incorporated into its upcoming Harry Potter reboot, though how that will play out remains unclear.
