Following Charlie Kirk Assassination, Disney Complies to New Presidential Order

Flags at Walt Disney World Resort were seen flying at half-staff yesterday, in accordance with an order issued by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis following the assassination of Christian conservative public figure Charlie Kirk.

“I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida immediately until sunset on Sunday, September 14, 2025,” the directive stated, marking an official period of mourning across the state.

A Presidential Directive

The timing of the order has sparked discussion online, as it coincides with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Social media users quickly highlighted the overlap, with one fan commenting: “It’s both. Our commander in chief ordered it for all flags, so it happened and should remain at half staff through at least Sunday.” Some guests visiting Walt Disney World interpreted the lowered flags as a gesture honoring Kirk’s passing, while others emphasized that state-mandated protocol requires flags on government and state-affiliated properties to comply with such directives, regardless of local sentiment.

Despite the public visibility of the half-staff flags, many questions remain about the response of private entities within the resort, including hotels and theme park attractions. As of now, Disney has not released a statement regarding the lowered flags or whether the company will formally acknowledge Kirk’s death during the weekend.

A Divisive Figure

It is worth noting that Charlie Kirk was a controversial figure during his lifetime, and his divisive public persona has fueled speculation over how organizations such as Disney might respond. “It remains unclear if private entities within the resort…will continue to fly their flags at half-staff through sunset today, in line with the governor’s order,” observers noted, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding corporate participation in state-directed mourning.

The use of flags as a symbol of national or public mourning has a long-standing tradition in the United States, typically signifying respect for those who have passed or marking solemn anniversaries. In this instance, Florida’s order ensures both the legacy of Charlie Kirk and the remembrance of the September 11 attacks are recognized publicly across the state.

As the weekend progresses, attention will remain on Walt Disney World and other prominent locations to see if the flags continue to fly at half-mast through sunset as mandated. Guests and online communities alike are watching closely, interpreting the gesture in multiple ways amid ongoing discussions about its significance.
