‘The Acolyte’s Future Has Been Confirmed by ‘Star Wars’

The Acolyte transported viewers to the High Republic era, long before the Skywalker saga, offering a glimpse at the earliest stirrings of Sith influence. Created by Leslye Headland, the series explored a period often called the Jedi’s Golden Age, revealing that even then, the Force could be interpreted in conflicting ways.

The show quickly became one of the most divisive Star Wars entries in years, drawing comparisons to the heated debates around Disney's sequel trilogy. Fans argued over lore, storytelling choices, and the series’ tone and representation.

Despite eight episodes of strong performances and intricate plotting, The Acolyte ended prematurely. Reports cited underwhelming viewership, though many believed vocal online criticism aimed at the show’s creative direction and cast—including Amandla Stenberg (Osha/Mae Aniseya), Lee Jung-jae (Jedi Master Sol), Manny Jacinto (Qimir/The Stranger), and Jodie Turner-Smith (Mother Aniseya)—was influential.

From its inception as a female-centric series led by a queer woman showrunner, The Acolyte gained attention for expanding the Star Wars narrative scope. But it also faced detractors accusing the series of being overly political.

Disney’s Alan Bergman later pointed to budgetary limitations as a reason against Season 2. However, analytics from Parrot Analytics indicated the series outperformed Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka in audience demand, suggesting financial issues, rather than reception, drove the cancellation.

Season 2 would have explored character depth and backstory, particularly Qimir’s. Episode 8 introduced Darth Plagueis on Qimir’s stormy homeworld, an oceanic planet home to “an intelligent reptilian species that lives far from the islands,” possibly Bal’demnic from Star Wars Legends. Cortosis deposits are tied directly to Qimir’s armor.

Additional lore revealed Qimir’s time in Hutt Space, portraying him as more dangerous than his outward calm implies. His age is “unknown,” and his pharmaceutical expertise suggests he may have lived unusually long. His Sith lineage is uncertain: “a pretender to [Sith] lineage… Whether he is the true heir to the Sith is a mystery no one will survive to solve.” His helmet is purely “cosmetic,” leaving him reliant on the Force.

The series also built ties to the sequel trilogy as revealed in the upcoming “The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte.” Headland explained via SFFGazette, “It was in the design of the character, as well as knowing that we were going to introduce Darth Plagueis, who has to end up with Palpatine as his apprentice.

“Following the Rule of Two–a precept that limited the Sith to just two at any given time, a master and an apprentice–one way to keep it going is if the Stranger is the first Knight of Ren, part of a Sith-adjacent cult that we know eventually survives,” she added.

The Knights of Ren, introduced in Star Wars: Episode VII–The Force Awakens (2015) and seen in Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019), represent the dark side’s rawer, primal energy, living by instinct and violence. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) assumed leadership after the original Ren, and the group became his enforcers before rebelling. Comics, guides, and tie-ins expand their story, with The Acolyte hinting at early Sith connections.

The Acolyte was divisive but made a significant impact, exploring Qimir and Osha’s bond, Jedi Council shortcomings, and Darth Plagueis’s live-action debut. With the series over, Ahsoka Season 2 remains the only confirmed live-action project, targeting a 2026 release and possibly concluding the story.

Star Wars will return to theaters in 2026 with The Mandalorian and Grogu, acting as a bridge or substitute for the upcoming Season 4. Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter follows in May 2027. Other cinematic projects, including Simon Kinberg’s trilogy and the Rey-led New Jedi Order film, remain in early development.

Bergman stated, “…we’re looking at a number of additional series… They have to be great, and when we’re in the position where we think we have what we want, we’re going to move forward.” The Acolyte ultimately stands as a bold exploration of Star Wars’ dark side, leaving questions about the Force, the Sith, and the galaxy’s future unanswered.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
