Star of ‘The Acolyte’ Officially Returning to ‘Star Wars’ Franchise After Being Cancelled

Lucasfilm’s The Acolyte took audiences into uncharted Star Wars territory, exploring the High Republic era long before the Skywalker Saga. Helmed by Leslye Headland, the series revealed a darker, more nuanced view of the Force, delving into early Sith activity while challenging the notion of the Jedi’s Golden Age.

From its debut, the show provoked passionate reactions. Its eight-episode story ended with many questions unresolved, and reports suggested low viewership prompted cancellation. Observers noted that vocal online critics targeted the cast—including Amandla Stenberg (Osha/Mae Aniseya), Lee Jung-jae (Jedi Master Sol), Manny Jacinto (The Stranger/Qimir), and Jodie Turner-Smith (Mother Aniseya)—and the creatives, fueling speculation that fan backlash influenced Lucasfilm’s decision.

The series’ “female-centric” focus drew both acclaim and criticism. Headland, a queer woman, led a diverse cast that represented a broader, more inclusive vision for Star Wars. While celebrated for its progressiveness, detractors branded it “woke,” making the series a flashpoint in discussions of representation and creative risk.

Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman later attributed the cancellation to budget issues. Still, Parrot Analytics data indicated The Acolyte outperformed Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, and even Ahsoka, suggesting that financial considerations may have outweighed fan engagement in the decision-making process.

The show’s unfinished arcs, which explored the histories and relationships of key characters, now linger in supplemental material. Despite its early end, The Acolyte is remembered as a daring, unconventional entry in the Star Wars canon.

Now, Turner-Smith is back in the Star Wars universe, lending her voice to an episode of Star Wars: Visions Season 3. Her return comes nearly a year after openly criticizing the franchise for failing to defend the cast against a torrent of online harassment.

“She put so much care and thought and love into that, and it’s disappointing to feel like your studio is not having your back in a very public-facing way,” Turner-Smith told Glamour Magazine in 2024. She added: “They’ve got to stop doing this thing where they don’t say anything when people are getting f***ing dog-piled on the internet with racism and bullshit. It’s just not fair to not say anything. It’s really unfair.”

Turner-Smith also spoke about structural inequality in Hollywood: “We don’t get to fail upward like a lot of white men.” Her comments underscore the challenges The Acolyte faced, including toxic fan reactions and historically low Rotten Tomatoes audience scores for the franchise.

Returning to Lucasfilm signals Turner-Smith’s commitment to engage with the universe despite past grievances. She is part of the English voice cast in WIT Studios’ “The Bounty Hunters” episode.

Star Wars: Visions reimagines the galaxy through a wide range of animation styles and storytelling traditions. Debuting on Disney+ in 2021, the anthology invited international studios to create standalone shorts, expanding and reinterpreting Star Wars lore.

Season 1 primarily featured Japanese anime studios, combining samurai traditions and cyberpunk influences. Season 2 widened the creative scope, including studios from Spain, Ireland, Chile, and India, allowing for even more diverse visual and narrative experimentation.

Non-canonical by design, each episode offers creative freedom, ranging from intimate character-driven stories to large-scale adventures. Season 3, set to arrive in 2025, continues to showcase fresh perspectives on Star Wars while celebrating the universal appeal of its central themes.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
