Disney Quietly Restores Iconic Detail at Big Thunder Mountain

Disney doesn’t always make a big announcement when it’s time to celebrate progress, but eagle-eyed guests at Magic Kingdom have spotted something that has fans cheering. After months of being absent during refurbishment, a key figure has quietly returned to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad — and it’s giving everyone hope that the coaster’s reopening might be right around the corner.

The Return of the Goat Signals Progress

According to reports from WDWNT, one of the goats has officially been restored to the attraction. While it’s not the TNT-holding Billy the Goat that fans know best, it’s still a major sign that things are wrapping up behind those construction walls. The goat has reclaimed his spot atop one of the mountain’s rocky cliffs, looking cleaner, brighter, and ready for riders to spot him once again.

This is the first real sign of visible progress since scaffolding began covering the mountain earlier this year. Typically, when decorative elements and props begin returning to their original spots, it means most of the heavy construction and track replacement work has already been completed.

Big Thunder’s Major Overhaul

The closure of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in early 2025 was a big deal. The ride isn’t just getting a fresh coat of paint — it’s being rebuilt with a new track system and an enhanced opening sequence that will give guests a more immersive start to their adventure. Crews have been repainting large sections of the mountain, repositioning construction walls near the entrance, and adding lighter brown tones across the rockwork to make the landscape pop even more.

Disney hasn’t revealed exactly when the coaster will reopen, but the company has confirmed a 2026 timeline. Judging by the progress, though, “early 2026” is starting to sound very realistic.

Frontierland’s Comeback Story

The timing couldn’t be better. With the debut of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and updates to Country Bear Jamboree, Frontierland is in the middle of a complete transformation. Big Thunder Mountain’s reopening will help bring balance back to that side of the park and give guests another reason to linger beyond the new attractions.

For longtime fans, seeing that familiar goat back in his rightful place means more than just progress — it’s a comforting reminder that Disney’s storytelling is built on these little details. The quiet return of one mountain-dwelling goat says it all: the wildest ride in the wilderness is almost ready to rumble once again.
