CONFIRMED: Disney Will Change Fantasmic! Last Minute Amid Crowd Fears

It's no secret that the final week of December is one of the most chaotic periods on Walt Disney World’s operational calendar.

Magic Kingdom typically absorbs the highest volume of guests. This year, from December 22, the park will open up entertainment normally exclusive to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party to all daytime guests, including Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks and Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, often coinciding with capacity-level crowds.

That pressure inevitably spills elsewhere. As Magic Kingdom tightens, guests redistribute across the rest of the resort, particularly during the evening hours. Disney’s Hollywood Studios consistently sees heavier nighttime traffic during the Christmas-to-New Year's window.

Hollywood Studios has fewer large-scale nighttime options (let's be real, nobody's rushing over to watch Wonderful World of Animation), which concentrates demand around one show in particular.

Fantasmic! has long served as the park’s primary evening draw. The show, staged in the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, features Mickey Mouse battling Disney villains through large-scale projections, pyrotechnics, and live performers.

According to WDW Info, the amphitheater can hold roughly 10,000 guests when standing room is included. Even at that scale, Fantasmic! regularly fills on peak nights, with guests lining up well before showtime.

During the holiday season, those conditions become more acute. Missed capacity cutoffs can disrupt entire evening plans, making entertainment scheduling a critical pressure point as crowds reach their annual peak.

Disney Confirms Last-Minute Fantasmic! Schedule Change

Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed a late adjustment to Fantasmic!’s holiday schedule amid rising crowd levels.

Beginning December 27, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will add an extra nightly performance of the show.

From December 27 through December 31, as well as January 2 and January 3, Fantasmic! will be offered three times per night. As listed on the Disney World website, performances are scheduled for 6.30 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9.30 p.m.

The change marks a departure from the schedule in place earlier this month. For most nights prior to December 27, Fantasmic! is performed twice per evening.

On December 19, 21, 23, 24, 25, and 26, performances are set for 7.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. On December 20 and December 22, the show runs at 6.30 p.m. due to Disney Jollywood Nights, the separately ticketed event at Hollywood Studios.

New Year’s Day brings another variation. On January 1, Fantasmic! will be performed twice, with showtimes at 8 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

After January 3, the schedule is expected to revert to one performance per night on most evenings, aligning with the typical post-holiday slowdown.

Why Fantasmic! Still Carries Crowd-Control Weight

Fantasmic! has evolved over time, with its most recent significant update taking place in 2022. Disney removed the lengthy and controversial Pocahontas (1995) battle sequence and the Peter Pan (1953) segment as part of that revision.

The current version runs just under 30 minutes and features a condensed medley including Pocahontas, Mulan, Aladdin, Elsa, and Moana.

The show still ends with Mickey Mouse defeating an array of Disney villains before characters appear aboard Steamboat Willie, and Sorcerer Mickey makes one final dazzling appearance. On nights when the boat is unavailable, performers instead dance on Mickey’s mountain stage.

Even with those changes, Fantasmic! remains one of Disney World’s most effective crowd-distribution tools. Adding a single performance can redirect thousands of guests during peak periods.
