Maul has become one of the rare Star Wars villains whose story has continued to expand long after his original death. What began as a visually striking but mostly silent villain has grown into a multi-era character spanning films, animation, and tie-in media. And now, he has his own upcoming Disney+ series with Maul — Shadow Lord. Watch the trailer below:
With the show arriving soon, now's the time to catch up on all things Maul. Here are all of his appearances throughout Star Wars film and television, in the most ideal viewing order.
Maul Film and TV Watchlist
Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace
Maul first appeared in the faraway galaxy in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (1999), serving as Darth Sidious’ apprentice and enforcer.
Ray Park handled the physical performance, while Peter Serafinowicz lent his vocal talents.
Despite limited dialogue, Maul left a lasting impression on fans through his iconic lightsaber duel with Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
His apparent death in the 1999 film — being cut in half by Obi-Wan — was considered definitive for years. But Lucasfilm revisited that ending with Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
The animated series revealed that Maul had survived, sustained by his connection to the dark side. Voiced by Sam Witwer, Maul sought vengeance against Obi-Wan (James Arnold Taylor), formed criminal alliances, and eventually seized control of the planet Mandalore.
His storyline stretches across multiple seasons, including a major battle during Order 66 and his complex relationship with Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein).

Star Wars Rebels
Maul’s story ultimately reached its conclusion in Star Wars Rebels.
Set years after The Clone Wars, the series depicts an older Maul, voiced again by Witwer, consumed by his obsession with Kenobi (Taylor).
In the Season 3 episode “Twin Suns,” Maul tracks his rival to Tatooine, where their brief final duel ends with Obi-Wan killing him.

Solo: A Star Wars Story
The character later resurfaced in live-action in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), which takes place before Rebels.
Appearing in the film’s final moments via hologram, Maul is revealed as the hidden leader of the Crimson Dawn syndicate. Ray Park returned physically, while Witwer again voiced the character, reinforcing the continuity between animation and film.

Shadow of Maul Comic Book Prequel
Before the new series arrives, Marvel Comics is expanding Maul’s criminal storyline with the five-issue prequel Shadow of Maul, written by Benjamin Percy with art by Madibek Musabekov. The story introduces the planet Janix and sets up Maul’s criminal operations.
The Disney+ series, Maul — Shadow Lord, takes place after The Clone Wars and before Solo.
The series stars Sam Witwer alongside Richard Ayoade, Vanessa Marshall, Chris Diamantopoulos, A.J. LoCascio, David W. Collins, Steve Blum, Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura, Dennis Haysbert, and Charlie Bushnell.
The animated series premieres April 6 with a two-episode launch on Disney+.
