Disney Shutters Popular ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Ride

One of Disney’s most elaborate attractions has quietly closed, removing a major draw from a park known for operational consistency and high-capacity experiences.

For decades, Walt Disney Imagineering has shaped the evolution of themed entertainment. Early attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion relied on physical sets, practical effects, and carefully paced storytelling to create immersive environments that defined the Disney park experience.

That design philosophy continued as Disney expanded internationally. Newer attractions increasingly emphasized complexity, blending ride systems, projection, and Audio-Animatronics to deliver experiences that function more like staged productions than traditional rides.

In the past decade, several attractions have stood out for their ambition. Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure at Shanghai Disneyland and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT both marked significant technical leaps for the company.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance became the clearest example of this shift. Its multiple ride systems and large-scale sets earned praise, though its operational challenges highlighted the risks that come with such complexity.

Another attraction, however, has often been mentioned alongside Rise of the Resistance for different reasons, particularly its consistency, visual clarity, and execution.

A Flagship Attraction at Tokyo Disneyland

Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast opened in 2020 at Tokyo Disneyland as part of the park’s largest expansion to date. From the outset, it was positioned as a centerpiece rather than a supplementary experience.

The trackless dark ride takes guests through the story of Beauty and the Beast (1991). Ride vehicles move independently through the attraction, allowing scenes to unfold with flexible pacing rather than a fixed path.

The attraction features 35 electric Audio-Animatronics figures – such as Belle and Chip and Mrs. Potts in their human forms – spread across multiple large-scale sets. These include the ballroom, the courtyard, and the dining room, each designed to closely mirror scenes from the animated film.

Movement is central to the ride’s design. Characters interact continuously, and scenes transition smoothly rather than stopping and resetting, giving the experience a steady rhythm throughout.

One of the ride’s most recognizable moments uses a Pepper’s Ghost illusion to depict the Beast’s transformation. The effect relies on practical staging rather than projection, echoing techniques used in earlier Disney attractions.

Demand for the attraction has remained high since its debut. Standby wait times frequently exceed several hours, and Disney Premier Access is often unavailable early in the day.

When crowd levels peak, Tokyo Disneyland has occasionally stopped accepting new guests into the standby queue, a measure typically reserved for the park’s highest-demand attractions.

Temporary Closure Confirmed

As of today, Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast is closed to all guests at Tokyo Disney Resort.

The attraction is scheduled for temporary maintenance from February 27 through March 9, 2026. The resort has not provided additional details regarding the scope of the closure.

It is not the only attraction currently unavailable. Dumbo the Flying Elephant has been closed since January and is not expected to reopen until the end of July.

Mickey’s Philharmagic and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin are also closed, further reducing the number of operational attractions in the park.

Elsewhere, the Swiss Family Treehouse has remained shuttered since 2022. Tokyo Disney Resort has not announced reopening plans, and previously released concept art suggests the area may be redeveloped in the future.

That concept art, shared by the Oriental Land Company, referenced possible experiences inspired by Up (2009), though no formal plans have been confirmed.

Tokyo Disney Resort has not stated the reason for Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast’s closure. Given the short maintenance window, major changes appear unlikely.

Still, the attraction’s absence is noticeable. As one of Tokyo Disneyland’s most popular and technically advanced rides, even a brief closure affects crowd flow and guest planning.
