Disney’s Live-Action ‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ Changes ‘Encanto’ Madrigal Sister

Disney built its brand on stories where good triumphs, evil is defeated, and fairy tale endings feel permanent. For decades, that structure shaped everything from Cinderella’s transformation to Ariel’s sacrifice and Rapunzel’s journey toward love.

Descendants disrupted that pattern in 2015 by reframing the conversation. Instead of focusing on heroes, the Disney Channel franchise explored the aftermath of villainy, asking what life looks like for the next generation left behind.

Under the direction of Kenny Ortega, the original trilogy followed Mal (Dove Cameron), Evie (Sofia Carson), Jay (Booboo Stewart), and Carlos (Cameron Boyce), all children of infamous Disney antagonists. Raised in isolation on the Isle of the Lost, they were given a rare opportunity to rewrite their futures. With energetic musical numbers and a narrative centered on self-discovery, the films connected strongly with younger audiences.

The loss of Cameron Boyce in 2019 marked a turning point for the series, casting doubt on its future. Disney pressed forward years later with Descendants: The Rise of Red in 2024, opting to introduce a new wave of characters rather than continue the original storyline.

This installment followed Red (Kylie Cantrall), daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe Charming (Malia Baker), daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Together, they embarked on a time-bending quest to stop the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora) before she fully embraced her darker instincts. The film delivered a new perspective, even as fan reactions landed across the spectrum.

Despite that, the franchise’s reach remains significant. “Since the premiere of Descendants in 2015, the franchise has dominated youth entertainment, with each of the first three films ranking as the most-watched cable movie of their year, amassing nearly 1 billion hours of viewing across linear and streaming in the US,” Disney wrote in its press release earlier this year.

“In 2024, Descendants: The Rise of Red debuted on Disney+ as the most-watched original movie among Kids and Girls 6–11, sparking over 9 billion lifetime views and inspiring a top Halloween costume. In the summer of 2025, Descendants/ZOMBIES Worlds Collide Tour thrilled sold-out crowds in over 40 arenas across North America.”

Looking ahead, Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is set to arrive in 2026, continuing the story shortly after The Rise of Red. The new film is expected to examine what “happily ever after” actually means once the dust settles, continuing the franchise’s interest in life beyond traditional endings.

Returning leads Red and Chloe will be joined by a lineup of new characters, many tied to well-known Disney legacies. But one addition stands out: a crossover with Encanto that expands the shared universe in an unexpected way.

Alexandro Byrd will play Luis Madrigal, the son of Luisa Madrigal. In Encanto (2021), Luisa—voiced by Jessica Darrow—became a standout character thanks to her emotional vulnerability and the widely recognized song, “Surface Pressure.” Bringing her son into Descendants introduces a new connection between Disney’s modern storytelling and its legacy properties.

The Wonderland setting also opens the door for additional newcomers. Pink (Liamani Segura), Red’s sister, will make her debut, alongside Maddox Hatter (Leonardo Nam), the son of the Mad Hatter. Returning characters Squeaky (Dayton Paradis) and Squirmy (Ryan McEwen) will reprise their roles as Mr. Smee’s sons, while Robbie (Joel Oulette), the son of Robin Hood, appears poised to challenge expectations with a more villainous streak.

The film is being written by Tamara Chestna, Dan Frey, and Ru Sommer, and directed by Kimmy Gatewood, with Disney keeping most plot details tightly guarded. Even so, the expanding cast and crossover elements suggest a broader strategy to grow the Descendants universe beyond its original scope.

At the same time, the introduction of a Madrigal family member has sparked renewed discussion about Encanto’s future. Although no sequel has been officially confirmed, the continued presence of the franchise in other areas—particularly theme park developments—points to ongoing interest from Disney.

Whether Wicked Wonderland plays a role in reviving Encanto on screen remains uncertain, but it highlights Disney’s willingness to connect its newer hits with established brands.

As Descendants continues to evolve, it remains rooted in its core idea: the past may shape its characters, but it doesn’t define them. With a mix of returning favorites and unexpected additions, the next chapter is positioning itself as one of the franchise’s most expansive yet—one that looks beyond the ending and focuses on what comes next.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.

  1. Is the son of Robbie gonna be an anthro fox? I’m asking because while Disney’s 1973 adaptation is their most well known version of the story, Disney has made Robin Hood adaptations (1952’s The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men and 2002’s Princess of Thieves) where he’s a human. They also own the rights to the OTHER 1991 Robin Hood movie and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (Disney owns 20th Century Fox).

Imma be honest, if he’s NOT an anthro Fox like the 1973 adaptation, I’m disappointed. The only way I’d be happy if they chose the human route is if they’d make him the son of Men in Tights!Robin Hood.
