For years, Disney and Johnny Depp seemed locked in a strange standoff.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise remained one of Disney’s biggest blockbuster properties, but the future of Captain Jack Sparrow became increasingly uncertain after Depp’s very public split from the studio. Fans spent years debating whether Disney would ever fully embrace Depp’s version of the franchise again, especially after rumors of reboots, spin-offs, and replacement leads continued circulating online.
Now, though, Disney has officially approved something that feels very different.

For the first time since Depp’s departure from the franchise, Disney has greenlit a brand-new project directly tied to the actor’s Pirates of the Caribbean era. While this is not a movie sequel announcement, it still represents the first major Disney-approved return to the world built around Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.
And fans are already wondering whether this could become the beginning of something much larger.
Disney Approves New ‘Pirates’ Experience
The newly announced project comes through Secret Cinema, the immersive entertainment company known for turning major film franchises into large-scale live experiences.
Secret Cinema confirmed it will launch Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Immersive Adventure in London beginning in February 2027. The experience will run for 10 weeks and promises elaborate sets, live actors, theatrical performances, sword fights, and interactive storytelling inspired directly by Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl(2003).
That detail matters.
Disney did not choose to move forward with a rebooted version of the franchise or some entirely new interpretation. Instead, this experience centers specifically on the original Depp-era mythology that turned Pirates of the Caribbean into a global phenomenon in the early 2000s.
Guests will reportedly explore locations like Tortuga and the Black Pearl while interacting with characters from the original film universe.
That alone feels like a major shift compared to the cautious distance Disney appeared to maintain over the last several years.
Captain Jack Sparrow’s Shadow Is Everywhere
Even though Johnny Depp himself has not been announced as part of the production, his presence hangs over the entire project.
It would honestly be impossible to recreate the world of The Curse of the Black Pearl without audiences immediately thinking about Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp’s performance became the defining element of the franchise, transforming what many expected to be a simple theme park adaptation into one of Disney’s biggest movie series ever.
That is why this announcement is generating so much conversation online.
For years, Disney seemed hesitant to publicly reconnect itself to Depp’s version of Pirates. The studio explored multiple development paths for the franchise, including reboot concepts and spin-off rumors, but nothing ever fully materialized into a theatrical release.
Now, Disney is once again leaning directly into the version of the franchise fans loved most.
Disney May Be Testing the Waters
Some fans believe this could be Disney quietly testing audience reaction before making larger decisions about the franchise’s future.
That may sound dramatic, but Hollywood studios do this all the time.
Legacy franchises often return first through events, experiences, or smaller projects before major film announcements happen. It allows studios to measure audience excitement while reconnecting fans to the brand itself.
And make no mistake: excitement around Captain Jack Sparrow has never really disappeared.
Even years after Depp’s exit, fans still strongly associate Pirates of the Caribbean with his performance. Every rumor surrounding a possible return continues generating enormous attention online, and Disney is undoubtedly aware of that.
The timing is also interesting because Hollywood has become increasingly focused on nostalgia-driven entertainment. Studios have seen major success bringing back legacy characters and beloved franchises from earlier decades.

Disney itself has leaned heavily into that strategy across multiple brands.
That is why this new Pirates announcement feels bigger than just another themed attraction.
The Immersive Experience Sounds Massive
Secret Cinema is describing the event as its “most ambitious production ever.”
The company said:
“For 10 weeks only, guests will be plunged into the legendary world of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, with the freedom to roam richly detailed environments, encounter iconic characters, and become part of the story themselves. Every night unfolds as a high-energy adventure, culminating in a spectacular celebration worthy of the seven seas.”
The production will also become the first major event staged inside Secret Cinema’s new long-term London venue.
In many ways, this feels like Disney fully acknowledging that the original Pirates era still carries enormous value with audiences worldwide.
And while no official film reunion has been confirmed yet, Disney’s willingness to reconnect with the Depp-era franchise at all marks a major development after years of uncertainty.
For fans who never gave up hope about Captain Jack Sparrow’s future, the Black Pearl suddenly feels a lot closer to sailing again.
