‘Star Wars’ Recasts Anakin Skywalker, but Keeps Hayden Christensen’s Digital Likeness

For many Star Wars fans, Hayden Christensen is the definitive Anakin Skywalker.

After debuting as the future Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones (2002), Christensen completed Anakin's tragic fall in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith (2005). Nearly two decades later, the actor remains closely tied to the character thanks to appearances in the live-action Disney+ shows Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) and Ahsoka (2023).

Anakin Skywalker's Star Wars Return

Now, Anakin is set to return once again—this time in a new Star Wars video game.

Electronic Arts, Lucasfilm Games, Respawn Entertainment, and Bit Reactor are preparing to launch Star Wars Zero Company, a turn-based tactical experience set during the closing stages of the Clone Wars.

Players will take control of Hawks, a former Republic officer leading a group of hired specialists known as Zero Company. Between missions, players can build their headquarters, gather intelligence, and deploy operatives across the galaxy while navigating a conflict that is rapidly approaching its end.

The game's newly released gameplay trailer offers a closer look at its story and characters, but it also included a notable surprise. Anakin Skywalker appears during the footage, crossing paths with the game's central team as part of an important mission. Watch the trailer below:

StarWars.com discussed the Jedi's involvement while recapping the trailer, confirming that Anakin's objectives briefly align with those of Zero Company.

His appearance immediately raises questions about who is portraying the character. No casting announcement has been made, but the game's version of Anakin appears visually inspired by Christensen's Revenge of the Sith appearance. Whether the actor has returned to provide the voice remains unknown. But there is another possibility that may be more likely

Who Is Voicing the New Anakin Skywalker?

Matt Lanter has spent years voicing Anakin across animated projects and video games. Beyond the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie and the animated series, he has portrayed the Jedi in several major titles, making him a natural candidate if Lucasfilm decides to maintain continuity with previous gaming appearances.

Of course, Christensen would hardly be an unexpected choice. Lucasfilm has increasingly brought the actor back into the spotlight, first for Obi-Wan Kenobi and later for Ahsoka, where he portrayed Anakin in both Clone Wars-era flashbacks and scenes set within the World Between Worlds.

Christensen's Star Wars journey is expected to continue in Ahsoka Season 2, which is currently in development.

Star Wars Zero Company will be released on August 27.
