Construction activity in the Germany World Showcase Pavilion at EPCOT has entered a new phase. The work now visible on the roofline above Das Kaufhaus confirms that the project is more extensive than the initial scaffolding and rolling planters suggested.
Roof Work Begins Above Das Kaufhaus
On Tuesday, WDWNT reported that roof work had begun on the Das Kaufhaus merchandise location in the Germany World Showcase Pavilion. The red shingles that previously covered the slanted roof and at least one tower above the building have been removed and replaced with brown scrim fabric while the work is underway. The outlet shared a photo of the structure's current state, documenting the transition from the pavilion's familiar red-roofed appearance to its current construction-wrapped state.
The roofing work follows weeks of escalating construction activity in the Germany Pavilion. Since June, Walt Disney World Resort has installed scaffolding, rolling planters, scrim fabric, and other barriers in the area. A permit filed by the Central Florida Disney Resort listed a third-party roofing company as the contractor for “general construction” in the pavilion — a detail that, in hindsight, pointed directly toward what's now visible on the building. Two weeks ago, the Germany Pavilion bathrooms also closed for their own separate refurbishment.
Das Kaufhaus remains open throughout the roof work, though some entrances may close temporarily when construction is active directly overhead.
How Far Will It Spread?
The scope of the roofing project beyond Das Kaufhaus hasn't been confirmed. Several other buildings in the Germany World Showcase Pavilion are showing signs of wear, rot, aging, and sun fading visible on multiple rooflines in the area. Walt Disney World Resort typically addresses infrastructure in batches to avoid the jarring visual contrast between freshly replaced and aged fixtures, which makes it reasonable to expect the roofwork could extend to neighboring structures.
Scaffolding, scrim, and rolling planters are still surrounding the Stein Haus gift shop facade nearby, suggesting that the building may be next in line for similar attention. Stein Haus remains accessible through the Weinkeller entrance throughout the construction.
