Disney took a major gamble with one of its biggest Star Wars properties. Instead of continuing a successful Disney+ series with another season, Lucasfilm moved Din Djarin and Grogu to theaters.
That decision hasn't led to the next major Star Wars movie franchise Disney may have envisioned.
Following the disappointing theatrical performance of The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), Disney is bringing the movie to Disney+. Meanwhile, there is still no Season 4 of The Mandalorian on the schedule.

Unless Lucasfilm changes course, the movie that replaced Season 4 could now serve as the conclusion to the series that started everything.
The Mandalorian Was Supposed to Continue
When The Mandalorian debuted in 2019, it became one of the defining originals of Disney+. Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and Grogu eventually led three seasons while helping launch a larger interconnected corner of Star Wars.
The story wasn't originally supposed to stop with Season 3.
Creator Jon Favreau previously confirmed that scripts for Season 4 had been written. Those plans would have continued Din and Grogu's adventures while connecting with other MandoVerse stories.
Lucasfilm ultimately went in another direction.
Instead of moving ahead with another Disney+ season, the company turned its attention toward The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026). Material intended for the fourth season was folded into the theatrical project.
Cast members later confirmed how far the original television plans had progressed. Jonny Coyne expected his character to appear across multiple episodes, while Hemky Madera said material involving his character eventually became part of the movie.
Season 4 didn't simply get delayed. Its planned story was redirected elsewhere.
Disney's Theatrical Gamble Didn't Pay Off
Moving Din and Grogu to theaters gave Disney an opportunity to transform two streaming stars into theatrical draws.
The results weren't nearly as strong as Disney likely wanted.
The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) opened with approximately $165 million worldwide before suffering a sharp decline during its second week. It eventually finished its theatrical run with around $345 million worldwide.
While that's still hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales, the performance didn't immediately establish Din and Grogu as the foundation of another major theatrical Star Wars franchise.
Now, the movie is heading back to where this entire story began.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Is Coming to Disney+
Disney has confirmed that The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) will arrive on Disney+ on September 2.
The release creates an interesting full-circle moment.
Din and Grogu became enormously popular through Disney+, left television behind for their theatrical adventure, and will now bring that same movie directly to the streaming audience that originally embraced them.
More importantly, there's currently nothing scheduled after it for The Mandalorian.
Lucasfilm has not announced Season 4, despite those earlier scripts and production plans.
The studio has also previously presented The Mandalorian with the run dates “2019–2023” in an official featurette, another indication that Lucasfilm views the original series as finished.
Could Season 4 Still Happen?
Star Wars rarely closes a door permanently, so Din Djarin and Grogu could certainly return.
Lucasfilm could eventually revive The Mandalorian for Season 4, develop another movie, or bring the characters into another Star Wars project.
For now, however, none of those possibilities amount to an announced continuation of the original show.
Instead, Disney is preparing to release The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) on Disney+, while Season 4 remains absent from the company's plans.
Six years after The Mandalorian first changed the direction of Star Wars television, its planned fourth season became a movie, its theatrical gamble struggled to deliver blockbuster numbers, and that movie is now returning to Disney+.
Unless Disney changes course once again, that September release could mark the end of The Mandalorian as a television series.
