The San Diego Comic-Con is always rife with dramatic announcements about upcoming films or projects, particularly ones from Marvel Studios — and at this year’s Comic-Con, Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn has made a big announcement about Rocket the raccoon from the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Apparently, Rocket is going the way of Groot — that is, baby Groot. An immature Rocket the raccoon will be coming to the newest Guardians of the Galaxy film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set to come to theaters next year.
Rocket the raccoon is one of the most recognizable members of the Guardians of the Galaxy family — which seems like a challenge, since characters like Gamora, Nebula, and Drax are around. Rocket’s sardonic personality and (according to his friend Peter Quill or Star-Lord) “trash panda” appearance have made him a fan favorite in Marvel films.
The feisty raccoon is voiced by Bradley Cooper and has appeared with the other Guardians in many Marvel or Avengers movies. This new movie is meant to be a bit of a finale for the original group of Guardians — which is why James Gunn’s announcement about Rocket has so many Marvel fans spooked.
It seems likely that Rocket the raccoon’s presence as a baby version of Rocket would be part of a flashback about his backstory, especially since he’s been referred to as the “heart” of the new film. We already knew that Rocket had a traumatic past, so a flashback showing a baby version of him is a logical choice.
Some Marvel fans are worried that the presence of a baby Rocket would play some part in the character’s demise, however, and fans are taking to Twitter to protest the possible tragedy.

Marvel has brought in many new characters recently on Disney+ shows like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight, and Guardians of the Galaxy was a refreshingly irreverent new series when it came onto the scene back in 2014. The ragtag team of sarcastic and imperfect heroes served as a perfect foil to the famously well-put-together and almost-too-heroic Avengers.
I swear ill bust into tears if anything happens to him, he has a soft spot in my heart. pic.twitter.com/o8QmXQ1ddt
