The new Ms. Marvel series might only have a few episodes so far (with new episodes being released on Disney+on Wednesdays), but this Marvel Original series has already made a good impression. Ms. Marvel follows the journey of Kamala Khan, who is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American high school student (and massive superhero fan) from Jersey City. Kamala struggles to deal with many common challenges in high school and at home, but her struggles are magnified when she inadvertently develops some superpowers like the Captain Marvel superhero that she so admires!
Kamala Khan is a huge fan of Captain Marvel, i.e. Carol Danvers (who is played by actress Brie Larson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), and the first episode of the show does an excellent job introducing audiences to all of the show’s main plot points: Kamala’s personal balancing act between her conservative family and her larger-than-life imagination, the emotional turmoil that comes with growing up, the challenges of high school, Kamala’s blossoming relationship with her best friend Bruno (played by Matt Lintz), and the plucky high school student’s deep desire to be a superhero like Captain Marvel.
The pilot episode of the show also introduces both the show’s quirky, self-aware style and one highlight of the show: comic book drawings. Since Kamala is often drawing comic book characters from the Marvel comics, Marvel Studios has made comics and drawings a part of the show’s setting in a novel and eye-catching way. Even text messages are displayed like comics!
The Ms. Marvel series stars newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, and Iman Vellani absolutely shines as Kamala. Her enthusiasm, doubts, and perspective are all laid out nicely for viewers in a memorable, funny, relatable, and poignant performance.
In the Marvel Studios and Disney+ featurette shown above, many crew members make it clear that Iman Vellani is the perfect girl to play Kamala Khan — and after seeing the first episode of the Marvel Original series, many viewers agree that this certainly seems to be the case!
