The original series Ms. Marvel from Marvel Studios, which will be streaming on Disney+ as of June 8, is being embraced by Captain Marvel herself! Actress Brie Larson, the Academy Award winner who plays Marvel comic book characters Captain Marvel and Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has shared the new Ms. Marvel teaser trailer on Twitter with the following caption: “You ARE a superhero, Kamala”.

The Ms. Marvel series follows the story of high school student Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American from Jersey City who dreams of being a superhero like the Avengers (and who openly fangirls about having superpowers). When Kamala actually acquires superpowers, though, she discovers that being a superhero in the Marvel universe is a lot more complicated than she thought it would be — especially in high school!
The Ms. Marvel series stars newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, i.e. Ms. Marvel. The Marvel comic book character Ms. Marvel will also be making an appearance in The Marvels, the next Captain America film, so it looks like Brie Larson and newcomer Iman Vellani will be working together directly to make a superhero movie! Monica Rambeau, who was introduced in WandaVision, is also set to appear in The Marvels.
Brie Larson and her original Captain Marvel film received lots of negative feedback from Marvel fans, with no general consensus as to why, so it will be interesting to see how the Marvel TV show Ms. Marvel compares in popularity to Captain Marvel and how the character Kamala is received by Marvel fans in comparison to how Captain Marvel was received.
Kamala Khan will also be an interesting character to compare to Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld. Kate Bishop in Hawkeye and Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel are both bringing an interesting new self-aware perspective into the Marvel Cinematic Universe: both characters are enthusiastic young women who actively aspire to be Marvel superheroes, and who also meet their idolized Marvel heroes. We’ll be waiting to see Ms. Marvel, and excited to see how Kamala fits with the original Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers)!
