Variety has revealed that the main character in the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians Disney+ series finally has a chosen actor! Walker Scobell, the actor who has just achieved household fame due to his role in the well-received Ryan Reynolds film The Adam Project, will play the demigod Percy (who was played by Logan Lerman in the widely-maligned film adaptations).

This original new Disney+ series has been long-awaited, so this will be big news for any Percy Jackson fans who love the fast-paced and Harry Potter-esque series. In this series, demigods (the children of Greek gods and humans) attend Camp Half Blood. Each demigod typically exhibits supernatural abilities that are connected to the god from their family, as well as personality traits that suit said god.

Percy is the son of Poseidon, so his connection to water and the sea is prevalent throughout the books. There are many humorous takes on Greek mythology in these books, and author Rick Riordan (who wrote all five of the books, as well as two companion books) has also expanded into some similar series about Egyptian mythology, Norse mythology, and Roman mythology.

The casting of young actor Walker Scobell will most likely be a casting choice that is approved by many fans, since Scobell is currently enjoying a rapid rise to fame after his film debut in the Netflix movie The Adam Project. In the movie, Scobell manages to match Ryan Reynolds (an actor famous for his sarcastic style and wit) joke for joke, and his performance was widely praised by many viewers as well as Ryan Reynolds himself.  Production for the new Percy Jackson series should start in the summer,!

Rick Riordan has openly criticized the first onscreen adaptations of his Percy Jackson books, even though many fans did praise Logan Lerman’s performance as Percy in The Lightning Thief (2010) and Sea of Monsters (2013), and Riordan has been active on social media when it comes to sharing his optimism about the second onscreen attempt that is coming to Disney+.

Now all that’s left is for Eragon to finally get the Disney+ series (and similar redo after a famously-bad movie) that author Christopher Paolini is campaigning for!
