Angelina Jolie References Her Marvel Character In An Unexpected Way During The Eternals Premiere

If you’ve ever seen Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Salt, or Wanted, then you know that the actress is not to be messed with when it comes to combat. Angelina has decades of experience in fight choreography and stuntwork (she even did all of the aerial ballet and aerial fight scenes herself in Tomb Raider, as well as the horseback-shooting-range scene in its sequel–and you can see below that she’s still very comfortable in aerial silks!), so Disney and Marvel fans weren’t surprised to learn that she was playing the warrior Celestial named Thena in the new Marvel Studios movie Eternals. However, you might be surprised to see how she paid tribute to her character’s motif during the movie’s premiere in L.A.!

Even though Jolie is known for being everything from a devoted humanitarian to a gritty, hard-working action star, she apparently “was very much the “mom” on and off-set, alongside co-star Salma Hayek”. The cast of the movie, particularly the women, formed a very strong bond while making Eternals. Angelina said the following about working with the other female ‘Celestials’: “A lot of times as an actress, you’re that individual strong woman, or you have one sister; you don’t often have this family where you really get to know women and see all the different strengths. Gemma’s grace and elegance and the way she walks through the world. Salma’s motherhood and power, and Lauren’s connection and intelligence. Everybody came as themselves. Maybe there’s something to that, that the characters weren’t as far off [from ourselves]. I think there’s a secret that we don’t know that our director knows, because if you look at her films, she casts a lot of real people as their roles and it shapes her films.”

Co-star Kumail Nanjiani confirmed the strong sense of nurturing that was on set, telling Entertainment Tonight that  “Angie, she would not go back to her trailer. She always hung out on set. She was always with everyone. So I realized what you do on camera is only part of the job”. He added that “Salma was the one who would always have dinners and people over. They are [both] amazing. I have learned so much from watching both of them. Just how to be a pro, you know? I was so impressed. They are always on time, they know all the words, they are very thoughtful about how they work and they really wanted to create a family.” It’ll be fascinating to see how intimidating characters like Thena combine with that sense of family in Marvel’s Eternals!
