Disney Removes Popular Guest Medical Treatment, Prolongs Some Suffering

A major refurbishment is underway at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Magic Kingdom Park, significantly changing one of Disney's most beloved roller coasters. While the ride is set to return with “new magic,” some Walt Disney World Resort guests may be disappointed to learn that one of its most unexpected benefits may be gone for good.

Since opening in Magic Kingdom Park's Frontierland in November 1980, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been known for its thrilling dips, sharp turns, and authentic “old west” ride experience. However, in recent years, the coaster has also gained an unusual reputation—helping guests pass kidney stones.

The phenomenon began as a rumor, but a scientific study later confirmed that the ride's rapid movements and vibrations could assist in dislodging small kidney stones. Many guests have shared personal stories of experiencing relief after riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, making it an unintentional health remedy for some visitors.

Like all Walt Disney World Resort attractions, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad undergoes routine refurbishments. However, after over four decades of operation, the ride is now receiving a more extensive upgrade. In 2024, Disney confirmed that the Frontierland coaster would close on January 6, 2025, for a year-long refurbishment, with an expected reopening in 2026.

While Disney has remained tight-lipped about the exact changes, new photos from Fantasyland News show that Walt Disney Imagineers are actively replacing sections of the ride's steel track. This photo, which the outlet shared on Instagram, shows a truck delivering a piece of roller coaster track at Magic Kingdom Park:

The new track could provide a smoother experience, potentially eliminating the very bumps and vibrations that helped guests with kidney stone relief.

What Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Changes Mean for Guests

Reports from Fantasyland News suggest that the replacement track is significantly wider than the previous version, with a larger center beam that could support a different ride feel. If the track's new design alters the ride's signature rough-and-tumble experience, guests hoping for kidney stone relief might find themselves out of luck.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's refurbishment is part of a larger transformation at Magic Kingdom Park, with two major expansions also in development. Two Cars (2006) attractions are expected to replace Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, while a Disney Villains land is planned “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain.” No official opening dates have been announced for these additions.

As the legendary Frontierland coaster undergoes its biggest update in years, fans wonder, will the “wildest ride in the wilderness” still live up to its name? Or will smoother tracks mean the end of one of Disney's most unexpected yet beneficial guest experiences?
