Near the end of Act I of Hamilton, Aaron Burr wonders why Alexander Hamilton relentlessly writes and discusses his opinions. Burr sings, “Every proclamation guarantees free ammunition for your enemies.” Every time Florida Governor Ron DeSantis opens his mouth about the Walt Disney Company, he hands his enemies free ammunition to ruin his political future. Now, he just gave his biggest rival a considerable victory.
In the fight for the Republican nomination for President, his rivals pounce every time Governor DeSantis mentions Disney World. He has been accused of being anti-business and anti-republican by his rivals. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie questioned DeSantis’ toughness by taking for picking a fight with Mickey Mouse. And former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley invited Walt Disney World to make a move a few hundred miles north to her home state.
But for Christie and Haley, it is more about getting recognition than an attempt to care about what happens between Florida Gov Ron DeSantis and Disney. But this has been a banner few weeks for the rival that genuinely gets under DeSantis’ skin. As DeSantis has taken a hit, his bitter rival has flourished.
The rivalry between Governor DeSantis and California Governor Gavin Newsom isn’t about 2024; it’s about 2028 when presumably former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden have removed themselves from the stage. This will open up the nominations for the governors from two of the biggest states in America.
Newsom fired the first shot by appearing on the Sean Hannity Show and inviting Disney to spend more money at Disneyland in California. DeSantis returned the favor by filming a commercial in San Francisco, where Newsom was the former mayor, and talking about the decline of a major American city.
But now, Newsom may have gotten the last laugh. While the Walt Disney Company canceled its Lake Nona project in Florida that would have brought $1 billion and 2,500 jobs to Central Florida, Disney is continuing its investment in California. According to Newsweek, Disney’s new California projects will generate $253 million annually for California and add 2,292 jobs.
So, while DeSantis is losing to Trump, Newsom is positioning himself as a job creator for California and good for business. It’s a bitter blow for Governor DeSantis to lose to the man who will be his rival for the next decade. But it will be for the people to decide if the Florida or California governor will be victorious. We’ll see in four years.
