Disney Fans Call This Iconic Ride “Unbearable”

When a lot of Disney fans think about rides and attractions that they love, there are certain ones that almost always come to mind. Pirates of the Caribbean, “it’s a small world”, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, The Haunted Mansion, and the now-closed Splash Mountain are just a few. These attractions evoke smiles, great memories, and even some who can remember the specific scents they hold (I’m talking to you Pirates water). However, there is one attraction — one of Disney’s most legendary — that doesn’t necessarily evoke fun-filled memories.

It evokes physically painful ones.

Redditor u/dixie_normous110 took to the social media platform to ask why Disneyland’s classic Matterhorn attraction was “unbearable”, saying that it hurts a lot.

Disney fans quickly bombarded the comments section, saying that they too think that the ride is very painful. Some guests even refer to it as the “spine adjuster”. Despite Disney adding new cushioning to the seats, the way the roller coaster moves is very harsh and abrupt. The Matterhorn has been a part of Disneyland since 1959, so it is not as smooth an experience as some of Disney’s newest roller coasters.

Other commenters tried to give tips and tricks to make the ride more enjoyable. Crossing their legs and leaning forward have worked for many of them.

If you cross your legs at the ankles, your knees will rest up against the pads on either side of the bobsled. I tried this a couple weeks ago and it really works. Lean forward, cross your legs.

Another trick that several Cast Members recommend (from personal experience), is that the guest leans into the turn before it happens. That way, your body does not hit the sides with the force of the turn. The seating on the Matterhorn is similar to that of Space Mountain at Walt Disney World Resort. There is one guest per row, and their legs go around the person sitting in front of them.

In addition to being one of Disneyland’s oldest rides, it also seems to be one of its most problematic. This year alone, the attraction has been closed several times for refurbishment. It’s one of the most commonly closed rides, along with Indiana Jones Adventure, which is located in Adventureland. However, Indiana Jones just went through a major refurbishment and has been functioning at a might higher level than before.

Matterhorn Bobsleds are open daily at Disneyland Park, weather permitting. However, it is important to note that the ride — like the rest of Fantasyland — will close early on nights when there are fireworks. It will reopen after the fireworks show is over.
