There’s nothing like seeing one of your favorite childhood shows return in new and exciting ways. In 2019, Disney announced that it would be rebooting the hit show, Lizzie McGuire. Lizzie McGuire told the story of Lizzie — played by Hilary Duff –, her family, and her friends Miranda and David “Gordo” Gordon. The show ran from 2001 to 2004 and remains a big part of Disney Channel history. Almost all the main cast members were set to return to the series, but one year later, Disney announced that the reboot had been scrapped.

Since its cancelation back in 2020, star Hilary Duff has been very honest that she is still interested in continuing Lizzie’s story. Back when Disney announced the reboot wasn’t happening, Duff said that the new show would have to show an adult Lizzie living her life in an adult way. She said that going more modern in an honest way may have “spooked” the House of Mouse.

Sadly, it seems that Duff is more interested in a Lizzie McGuire reboot than Disney is. According to a report from The Wrap:

Despite recently reopening the door for a “Lizzie McGuire” Disney+ reboot, Hilary Duff said she has not heard from Disney about any plans for a revival since.

When asked if she had heard from Disney since sharing that she is “optimistic” about a potential reboot, Duff responded, “No, I haven’t.” “Phone hasn’t rang,” Duff told TheWrap during a press day for Hulu’s “How I Met Your Father.”

Plans for a “Lizzie McGuire” revival, which ran from 2001 to 2004, began in 2019 when Disney+ announced that Duff would reprise her role in a sequel series with series creator Terri Minsky set to return as showrunner.

After the first two episodes had been filmed several months later, Minsky exited the project over creative differences with Disney — later explaining that her plans to make the show more “mature” conflicted with the brand’s family friendliness — and the show went on hiatus as Disney searched for another showrunner.

In the years since starring in the classic Disney Channel show, Duff has stayed very busy. She not only had a very successful music career, but she has starred in a number of successful shows, including Younger and How I Met Your Father.

Duff is still hopeful that Disney will find a showrunner for the Lizzie McGuire reboot who will have the same vision for the show that she does. While Disney may not be actively working on the show right now, they do have actors who are interested in revising their roles, a storyline in the works, and fans who would love to hear more from Lizzie’s inner monologue.

All episodes of Lizzie McGuire are currently available to stream on Disney+. The original series starred Duff as Lizzie, Lalaine as Miranda, Adam Lamberg as Gordo, Robert Carradine as Lizzie’s dad Sam, Hallie Todd as Lizzie’s mom Jo, and Jake Thomas as Lizzie’s brother Matt.
