Many Disney Channel fans and Lizzie McGuire fans have been clamoring for a reboot of the 2001 show with its star actress Hilary Duff. Unfortunately, the reboot that actually made it to the filming phase was shut down by Disney — and even though cast members from the original show had already expressed their disappointment and indicated that Disney higher-ups were behind the Lizzie McGuire reboot’s demise, actress Hilary Duff has solidified the story in a recent interview.
Hilary Duff has actually turned down many Lizzie McGuire reboot opportunities while waiting for the right one to bring back her loveable character Lizzie McGuire, and finally chose to accept the reboot with Disney+. Unfortunately, “the project tanked when Hilary and the network differed on their vision for adult Lizzie”.

According to the interview with Women’s Health, the main conflict about the Lizzie McGuire reboot involved the network’s desire to keep Lizzie unrealistically young while Hilary was “pushing for a more mature Lizzie”.
“She had to be 30 years old doing 30-year-old things,” the Younger and Cadet Kelly actress Hilary Duff said. “She didn’t need to be doing bong rips and having one-night stands all the time, but it had to be authentic. I think they got spooked.” Because Duff didn’t give in, the reboot was over before more than a few episodes had been filmed.

Hilary Duff now plays the lead character Sophie on How I Met Your Father, which is (ironically) a reboot of the How I Met Your Mother world and a spin-off of the original award-winning series set in New York City.

Hilary Duff has consistently been a fan favorite when it comes to former Disney Channel stars, even despite the struggles or negative publicity surrounding many former Disney Channel actors or actresses (Suite Life of Zack and Cody star Cole Sprouse recently spoke up about the “trauma” that came from being a child performer, and he also turned down the idea of a reboot).
Since Hilary Duff is often used as an example by fans when Disney Channel alums are discussed, and her character Lizzie McGuire is still a beloved character, many fans would probably have loved a more adult reboot that brought Hilary back into her iconic role!
