Disney has updated cast member costumes at Walt Disney World, a change that was overdue, as the previous materials prioritized appearance over cast member comfort in the Florida heat. While iconic, these old designs often overlooked safety, especially during the sweltering summer months. Although some fans may feel nostalgic about classic costumes, the new designs use lighter materials, making it safer and more comfortable for cast members working outdoors in Central Florida.
The Parking Cast Members Costumes Are Actually Cute
Bright new costumes are zooming into the wardrobes of parking and auto plaza cast members, featuring designs straight from Costume Designer Nicole, with the iconic Walt Disney World Mickey globe logo and sketches of famous vehicles from Walt Disney World attractions and Disney Animation. Whether you're a fan of classics like Herbie the Love Bug or prefer TRON Lightcycle / Run, this adorable print has something for everyone who appreciates Disney's vehicle history.
Beyond the print, which is honestly really well-designed, the raglan sleeves provide better movement, while the epaulettes, which are shoulder pieces, offer functionality, with each element intentionally chosen by cast members who provided input during the design process. Nicole explained that bringing more Disney storytelling to the parking costumes was very important to the team, noting they tried to find the best balance of past, present, and future with the vehicles chosen.
The parking and auto plaza cast members work outdoors in direct sunlight during peak afternoon heat when pavement temperatures can exceed 120 degrees, which is absolutely brutal and makes appropriate costume design critical for preventing heat-related illness.
EPCOT's The Land Got Vintage-Inspired Designs
The team wanted to breathe new life into cast costumes for The Land Pavilion in EPCOT, introducing unique new costumes featuring a print with an abstract rendition of the pavilion's original icon in an organic, impressionist style inspired by the windswept art throughout The Land.
Costume Designer Josh wanted to stay true to the history and vintage nostalgia of EPCOT when working on these pieces, explaining that the team sought ways to bring that vintage EPCOT story into the costumes in a way that still felt true to each area.
The beautiful mural work across the Living with the Land ride loading platform served as a huge inspiration for the overall look of these costumes, creating a visual connection between cast member uniforms and the attraction environment that honestly makes the whole experience feel more immersive.
Magic Kingdom's Hidden Mickey Costumes for Cast Members
One of the most iconic parts of the day at Magic Kingdom is the fireworks show at the end of the night, so the costuming team decided to bring that flourish of magic to life through outdoor vending cast costumes. A blue top with custom chambray-inspired print features art inspired by fireworks and natural flora found throughout Magic Kingdom's various lands.
But here's the best part: the print includes strategically placed hidden Mickeys throughout the shirt, which is such a Disney thing to do and creates conversation opportunities between cast members and guests who notice the hidden details. In the fashion world, designers often insert hidden details or references that can only be seen if you look closely, and these costumes are no different.
Comfort is key for outdoor vending cast members who spend entire shifts outside in Florida weather, so these costumes feature updated performance-style fabrics with stretch and UPF protection that shield cast members from harmful UV radiation that can cause sunburn and long-term skin damage.
The Design Process Is Comprehensive
The costuming team ensures costumes work well for cast members by incorporating feedback sessions, wear tests in real conditions, try-ons for proper fit, and role shadows to observe job duties and physical demands. Josh noted that the team shares insights so that successful fabrics or design elements can benefit future projects, focusing on comfort, safety, and functionality. The use of lighter materials and modern performance fabrics addresses the challenge of physical labor in Orlando's extreme heat, making work safer and more comfortable.
