Disney Legend, Whoopi Goldberg (Caryn Elaine Johnson), recently made headlines as she was suspended from ABC’s The View for a Holocaust comment she made in a January episode. Now, we’re learning Whoopi has decided to take a break from the ABC show.
As The View host, Whoopi Goldberg was suspended for two weeks in February 2022 for a comment she made claiming the Holocaust was not “about race.” The statement caused an uproar with several speaking out for the Jewish community.
Despite her apologies, Whoopi has seen a media storm including Gina Carano fans slamming Disney for Whoopi Goldberg’s suspension when Disney fired Gina for her controversial comments. The once Mandalorian star, Carano has called Disney out as having “double standards”.
Now, reports from USA Today share that we won’t be seeing Whoopi Goldberg on The View for a while.
The news was shared by The View co-host Joy Behar on an episode saying, “If you’re wondering where Whoopi is, the girl’s got a movie she’s making and she will be back when she finishes whatever she’s doing. So she’s gone for a while.”
Whoopi is starring in the upcoming Amazon Prime series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys which will begin filming. Whoopi is apparently taking this time to focus on the film by taking the extended break from The View.
Goldberg is well known across Disney fandom for her involvement with projects such as the voices of Shenzi in The Lion King (1994), Miss Mittens in Snow Buddies (2008), Stretch in Toy Story 3 (2010), and Ursula in Descendants 2 (2017). She has also performed in many cameos including The Muppets (2011).
Whoopi is also known as a host for Disney specials such as the recent Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary The Most Magical Story on Earth ABC Special. She has also hosted Decorating Disney: Holiday Magic.
Most recently, Disney fans have been eager to see Whoopi Goldberg reprise her role as Deloris Van Cartier (AKA Sister Mary Clarence) in the Sister Act film franchise with Sister Act 3 currently in the works as a Disney+ film.
Whoopi’s involvement with the many Disney projects over the years landed her the honorable title in 2017 of a Disney Legend.
