After the terrible year that the Walt Disney Company had in 2023, the casual observer would believe that Disney would do everything in its power to retake the crown as the top company in entertainment. Pull out all the stops, whatever it takes, win at all costs, or whatever other business-related statement you want to use to show your audience that 2024 will be different. But, based on Disney’s slate of new films, you get the feeling that Disney has already surrendered 2024 to its competitors.

The worst part of 2023 was quite possibly Disney’s movie releases. Disney Animation Studios, Marvel, Pixar, LucasFilms, and Disney Studios released seven films in 2023. Of the seven, five have already or are on track to lose more than $100 million. That feels like the type of year that requires a massive comeback from Walt Disney Studios, but instead, Disney is only releasing three films in 2024, all based on franchises.
In total, Disney Studios is releasing seven films; of those seven, four come from 20th Century Studios. The remaining three come from Pixar Studios, Marvel Studios, and Walt Disney Pictures. LucasFilm and Disney Animation Studios will not release a single movie in 2024.
The good news is that Disney has the most anticipated film of 2024 in Deadpool 3. The film sees Ryan Reynolds return as Wade Wilson and adds Jennifer Garner as Elektra and the triumph return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Reynolds and Jackman are friends in real life and have been teasing their collaboration for what seems like years, and now it’s finally here.
Deadpool 3 has always lived slightly outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it will be the only release from Marvel Studios in 2024, after the release of Captain America: Brave New World was delayed until 2025. With the delay, Disney has given up the Memorial Day weekend for the first time in years. The return of Ryan Reynolds will be released on July 26.
Disney’s first release of the year will be Pixar Studios’ Inside Out 2. The sequel will see the return of Riley’s emotions with the addition of a new friend, anxiety. Inside Out 2 will be Disney’s first release of the year, which won’t be until June 14. But with Pixar and Marvel’s only releases coming out more than a month apart, Disney will not have a new release for the Fourth of July weekend either.
Walt Disney Studios’ final release of the year will be Mufasa: The Lion King, the prequel to Disney’s live-action The Lion King (2019). After giving up most major holidays in 2024, at least Disney will have something in theaters for the Christmas and New Year week. And that’s everything from Disney for 2024.
There will be plenty for Star Wars fans on Disney Plus, but no announcement on Andor, Season 2 yet. And with only Inside Out 2, Deadpool 3, and Mufasa: The Lion King to hold Disney fans over, it appears that another disappointing year may be on the horizon.
