Even Disney’s magical realm isn’t immune to the occasional flare-up. This week, a brawl broke out at Shanghai Disneyland after one guest defied the park’s smoking policy.
As tensions simmered, the confrontation quickly escalated into a physical altercation, caught on camera for all to see. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about smoking at Disney parks and how difficult it is to enforce policies in the face of increasing guest disregard.

Disney parks have always maintained a careful balance between creating a family-friendly atmosphere and managing the diverse behaviors of millions of visitors. For years, smoking in certain areas was allowed, but in 2019, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort made the bold decision to eliminate in-park smoking areas entirely.
Shanghai Disneyland, however, has continued to allow designated smoking spots. Yet this policy has done little to quell growing frustration over guests lighting up in non-smoking areas, especially in crowded spaces like ride queues.
The Shanghai Disneyland Incident: A New Low
The fight at Shanghai Disneyland unfolded early in the morning as a group of guests waited in line at the entrance. One guest began smoking near families, ignoring the discomfort of others. Two parents intervened, asking the smoker to stop due to the presence of their children. Tensions escalated quickly, with the smoker responding dismissively, “How precious is your child?” Before long, two men were caught on camera pushing and shoving each other near the railings.

In an unfortunate twist, the incident highlights a growing issue within Disney parks: guests flouting smoking rules, often in busy areas. Despite Shanghai Disneyland offering 18 designated smoking spots spread across the park’s various lands, guests continue to ignore the guidelines, creating uncomfortable situations for families and fellow visitors.
A Disney cast member spoke candidly about the situation, explaining that smoking in the park is only allowed in specific areas, and staff are tasked with intervening when guests smoke in non-designated spots. “Some people smoke, and it seems that no one can stop them if they smoke quietly,” the cast member shared, highlighting a critical enforcement gap.
Smoking Issues Aren’t Isolated to Shanghai
Shanghai Disneyland’s struggle with smoking isn’t an isolated incident. Disneyland Paris, for example, has a strict no-smoking policy, but enforcement remains inconsistent. Guests often light up in off-limits areas like queues and walkways despite frequent reminders from cast members and visible signage. On busy days, the issue intensifies as security staff struggle to manage the crowd, leading to tense confrontations.

Guests have shared stories of unpleasant experiences where smokers ignored repeated requests to extinguish their cigarettes. One Reddit user described sitting through a fireworks show near a man who chain-smoked for the entire duration. Despite approaching a cast member for assistance, the situation remained unaddressed, adding to the frustration of families hoping to enjoy the spectacle.
The problem has become so prevalent that some visitors have suggested that Disney needs to step up enforcement. However, others argue that the root of the issue lies with guests themselves. “If this person doesn’t have the common decency to not smoke in a crowded place, it is unlikely they would listen to an employee asking them not to smoke,” one user noted. The risk of escalating hostility further complicates efforts to enforce policies, leaving many wondering whether Disney should consider a more drastic change.
