Some Disney Projects Not Affected by Writers Strike

Writers Strike Disney

As the writers’ strike continues into its first weekend, concern is beginning to rise among producers and viewers alike over the state of highly-anticipated projects currently underway.

But it appears that not all of Hollywood’s writers are a part of the Guild.

Picketing for the first time in over 15 years, the Writers Guild of America includes writers across the cinematic and television landscape. For The Walt Disney Company, the strike has the potential to be detrimental to shows and movies across its corporate subsidiaries, from ABC and Hulu to Marvel Studios and Disney+.

But an announcement regarding the Phineas and Ferb revival revealed that only the live-action projects are being affected.

According to Animation TV writer Benjamin Siemon, “The Animation Guild is under a different contract than the WGA. A different union.”

This would suggest that upcoming movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, such as Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and even Wish and Elemental, are still on schedule.

But he goes on to suggest that animation writers can’t even afford to strike.

“If these writers went on strike they’d immediately be fired,” he said. “They are paid even worse than WGA writers and basically have no ability to organize.”

The rise of streaming shows has allowed studios to put their shows through an optimization that delivers fewer episodes at a higher production quality than traditional television. This shift created smaller writer rooms with less work for fewer days, as well as an environment that makes it harder for new writers to start and develop their careers.

WAG is marching for better pay and to receive residuals from streaming shows as they do for episodes created for legacy media.
