If you’ve noticed some weird technical glitches across the Walt Disney Company’s major stations over the weekend, you aren’t going crazy. Like many studios, Disney uses a satellite in space to broadcast its offerings to consumers. However, a rare event involving the Disney satellite, the Earth, and the sun is causing annoying problems for ESPN, ABC, and other Disney programming for a few days.
Disney Satellite Event
According to meteorologists, the Disney satellite is experiencing a rare eclipse event where it is positioned perfectly between the Earth and the sun. Due to this direct line between the three, “sun outages” and brief interruptions are happening across Disney stations, such as ESPN, ABC, and even streaming. WCIA 3 Chief Meteorologist Kevin Lighty explained the event on Twitter/X:
The Disney satellite which provides the uplink/downlink for ESPN broadcasts is in a direct sun satellite Earth position which will cause signal issues the next few days. If you’re watching Oklahoma Texas today, you’ve seen the glitches.

Naturally, most consumers are unfamiliar with a Disney satellite or any events surrounding it. Social media has seen many people criticize Disney, ESPN, and ABC for the glitches, wondering why their performance has been so spotty lately.
It seems to be better when #Boomer is ahead…

Users on Reddit even discussed the issue on the r/CFB subreddit. Everyone seemed to want to educate and spread awareness about the Disney satellite eclipse and why viewers may see problems with ESPN sports broadcasts or other Disney programming.
Reminder: it’s sun outage week. That means the sun is directly behind the Disney satellite, and ESPNs might be a little choppy today.

The Importance of Satellites in Broadcasting
Satellites are integral to television and streaming content distribution as a pivotal link between studios like Disney and homes. Their significance in this process stems from their unique capabilities and global reach.
First and foremost, satellites act as content delivery conduits, enabling studios and content providers to transmit their programming over vast distances. By relaying signals to satellites, these entities can effortlessly broadcast content to a wide geographic area. This accessibility ensures that viewers in remote or underserved regions enjoy the same content as those in more urbanized areas.
Moreover, satellites boast extensive coverage areas, making them indispensable for studios aiming to expand their audience base. Regardless of location, satellites provide a consistent and reliable signal, minimizing disruptions caused by weather conditions or geographical obstacles. This reliability is paramount in maintaining a high-quality viewing experience for audiences worldwide.
Disney Satellite Causes ESPN Glitches
Live broadcasting of events, such as ESPN sports, news, and entertainment shows, benefits immensely from Disney’s satellite technology. It enables real-time transmission of content to viewers across the globe, ensuring that audiences can witness events as they unfold. Additionally, satellites provide an efficient distribution mode for studios and content providers seeking to reach a global audience. They can simultaneously transmit content to multiple regions and time zones, ensuring viewers can access content conveniently.
However, when the Disney satellite enters a position between the sun and the Earth, it causes issues. “Sun outages” and hiccups in broadcasting are common. The event is rare. Furthermore, these problems are minor and don’t last long. Nevertheless, people have been noticing ESPN and ABC glitches lately.
The Disney satellite will move out of this position within a few days. However, expect some weird broadcasting issues to persist while it sits between the sun and the Earth.
