Disney’s Avengers Campus Slammed By Sudden Spider-Man Change

Disney quietly tested a change to one of its Spider-Man attractions this week, temporarily removing a key visual element from the ride during regular park operations.

Marvel’s presence in Disney theme parks has expanded steadily over the past decade. After Disney acquired Marvel Studios in 2009, the company began exploring how its superhero characters could be integrated into its global resort portfolio.

The first permanent Marvel attraction opened overseas. Stark Expo debuted at Hong Kong Disneyland in 2017, introducing Iron Man to Disney parks and setting the stage for larger, land-scale developments.

Those plans came to fruition in the 2020s with the launch of Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure in 2021, followed by a second version at Disneyland Paris in 2022. While the lands share branding, their attraction lineups differ significantly.

The California campus includes Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! and is set to expand with Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab at Disneyland Resort. The Paris version replaced Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster with Avengers Assemble: Flight Force.

The one attraction common to both locations is Spider-Man. In California, it operates as Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure, while the Paris version is titled Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure. Both follow the same core storyline and gameplay.

Guests are introduced to the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, a fictional program funded by Tony Stark. When Spider-Bots escape and begin multiplying, visitors are recruited to help Spider-Man contain the situation.

The ride relies heavily on screens and gesture-based interaction. Riders use arm movements to sling virtual webs at on-screen targets, earning points as Spider-Man, portrayed by Tom Holland, appears throughout the experience.

Since opening, the attraction has received mixed feedback. Some guests have criticized its reliance on screens and compared it to Toy Story Mania, while others have praised its accessibility and interactive format.

Disney Tests Changes on Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure

During the December 26 test at Walt Disney Studios Park (soon to become Disney Adventure World), the attraction operated without its 3-D component. Guests were notified by a sign posted outside the entrance stating: “Exceptionally today, the web vision glasses won’t be needed.”

The move follows similar changes to Ratatouille: L'Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy at the same park, which is currently closed for updates, including the removal of 3-D after earlier testing periods.

Disney also permanently removed 3-D from Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT. The company has not confirmed whether the Spider-Man test will result in permanent changes or affect other versions of the ride.

Do you think Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure and Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure would be without 3-D?
