‘No One Likes Everything Disney Does,’ Disney Accused Of Using AI Bots to Make You Believe People Like Them

After the 2016 election, X (Twitter at that time) promised that it would crack down on fake accounts, sock-puppets, and bots, and for a while, it successfully halted the spread of misinformation. However, after Elon Musk took over the platform, most of the staff in charge of stemming the flow of misinformation were fired. This allowed the flow of misinformation and bot accounts to continue unabated.

But as it turns out, it isn’t just the Russians that were taking advantage of X’s new loose guidelines under Elon Musk. Companies have been using bots to help boost their reviews online, and it turns out that one of the biggest offenders was the Walt Disney Company.

A new report from X user @MasteroftheTDS accuses Disney of using hundreds of fake accounts to promote their movies and Disney Plus shows. The results show that many of these accounts use similar, if not the same, language and over-the-top excitement for Walt Disney Studios’ latest releases and announcements for upcoming projects.

Because so many of the comments are so similar, @MasteroftheTDS also accuses Disney of using artificial intelligence to craft the responses to its announcements.

All of the users have X’s blue check mark, which anyone can easily purchase without actually showing proof that you are who you claim you are.

In August, the Walt Disney Company announced investing in artificial intelligence to cut costs and determine how to use the new technology. But these posts show that Disney AI is already up and running.

If Disney is using generative AI on X, there is nothing to say that it isn’t also using it across all social media platforms to drum up support for its movies and Disney Plus.

Using Elon Musk’s Platform

There is also a bit of irony in Disney using Elon Musk’s lack of rules on X to boost its popularity. Last year, Disney pulled its advertising from X after Musk endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory. Musk retaliated by saying that Disney CEO Bob Iger should be fired and that he should “go f*** yourself.”

The war of words, mainly from Musk, became an actual fight when Star Wars actress Gina Carano announced that she was suing Disney with financial backing from Musk and X.

Musk and his lawyers found a loophole in California law that protects individuals from retaliation from their employers for things they say outside of work. However, the law has never been tested in court until now.

For now, it appears that Disney has figured out a way to use Musk’s X to boost its popularity with minimal effort. This may be Disney’s first foray into artificial intelligence, but it won’t be its last.
