16 Days Left: Updated Dress Code Policies To Take Effect at Disney World Next Month

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party kicks off at Magic Kingdom Park in just over two weeks — and whether you're a first-timer or a veteran of the event, Walt Disney World Resort‘s dress code rules are worth revisiting before you start putting together your family's costumes.

What You Can and Can't Wear

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is one of the only occasions when guests 14 and older are permitted to dress as their favorite Disney characters at a Walt Disney World Resort theme park. That said, the freedom to costume up comes with nine specific guidelines that every party-goer needs to know.

No posing as a character. A costume is fine, but performance isn't. Walt Disney World Resort draws a firm line between dressing up and acting:

“All Guests may dress as their favorite character, but may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.”

Family-friendly only. Whatever you wear needs to work for a crowd that includes young children:

“Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.”

No prop weapons. If it could be mistaken for a real weapon — even in a clearly costume context — leave it at home:

“Costumes may not contain any props or accessories that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.”

Nothing sharp or pointed. Props that don't look like weapons can still violate the rules if they pose a physical risk:

“Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.”

Be cautious with layers. Elaborate multi-layer costumes won't automatically get you turned away, but they will slow you down at the gate:

“Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged and may be subject to additional security screening.”

No trailing fabric. Anything that reaches the ground is a safety hazard for you and everyone around you, especially on rides:

“Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground. (for example, full-length Princess dresses)”

Capes stay above the waist. Capes are permitted, with one non-negotiable length restriction:

“Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.”

No costume masks — period. Medical face coverings remain permitted, but:

“Costume masks of any kind may not be worn.”

Headwear must not cover the face. Ears, themed hats, and other headpieces are welcome — with this important caveat:

“Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats are acceptable. Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords and tutus. Costume headwear may be worn as long as it does not cover the face.”

Religious headwear that covers portions of the face is a recognized exception to this rule.

The Bottom Line

Enforcement at the gate is handled by individual Walt Disney World Resort security cast members, and what passes one evening may not pass the next. The safest approach is to stay clearly within the guidelines rather than push their limits. If a costume element is giving you pause, swap it for something that isn't.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs on select nights at Magic Kingdom Park from August 7 through October 31, 2026.
