On Monday, the National Hurricane Center confirmed that Milton's maximum sustained winds reached 160 mph, marking a significant hazard for the state's residents and tourists. This storm prompted the declaration of a state of emergency across 51 counties, including Orange County, home to Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, and Polk County, home to LEGOLAND Florida Resort.

Experts predict that the Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort areas could experience severe weather conditions, including winds up to 110 mph. Officials advise that the storm will make landfall on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

With a Hurricane Watch in effect, visitors are advised to stay informed and ready to move quickly if conditions worsen.

As part of the state's emergency response to Hurricane Milton, the Florida Department of Transportation suspended tolls across West and Central Florida. This waiver went into effect at 10:30 a.m. EST on October 7. It will remain in place for seven days, allowing residents and visitors, including those heading to Walt Disney World Resort, to evacuate quickly and safely. Tolls are set to resume on October 14, but this timeline may shift based on the evolving conditions of the storm and its aftermath.

Areas with Suspended Tolls

The toll suspension affects several major routes critical for those evacuating from hurricane-prone areas. Specifically, Alligator Alley and key expressways in counties like Hernando, Hillsborough, and Orange will be toll-free. These changes will benefit locals and travelers visiting major attractions like Walt Disney World Resort, who might find themselves needing to leave due to the impending storm.

In tandem with the toll suspension, the Florida Department of Transportation has implemented Emergency Shoulder Use on Interstate 4 and portions of Interstate 75. This initiative allows for additional lanes during high-traffic evacuation periods, effectively managing vehicle flow and reducing congestion as swaths of people attempt to leave affected areas.

Availability of Real-Time Travel Information

Staying informed about evacuation routes and roadway conditions is essential during a hurricane. The Florida 511 Traveler Information System offers real-time updates regarding traffic conditions, road closures, and other relevant alerts. This resource is crucial for everyone, from residents to tourists, including those who plan to visit Walt Disney World Resort.
