Disney World Is About To Become Riskier To Visit After DeSantis Announcement

Walt Disney World Resort draws around 58 million visitors each year, making it one of the most-visited destinations on Earth. The Magic Kingdom Park remains the crown jewel, holding the title of the most attended theme park in the world. Even as costs continue to rise, families from across the globe flock to Orlando for the experience.

But in places where so many people gather, health risks often climb. Guests frequently report catching some kind of illness during or after their stay—an unsurprising reality given the scale of the 30,000-acre resort and the countless touchpoints each guest encounters. Those concerns are now under sharper focus as Florida moves forward with a plan that could alter public health policy across the state.

State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo announced in Valrico that Florida intends to abolish every vaccine mandate, including school immunization rules and childhood vaccine schedules. “Every last one of them,” Ladapo said, per the BBC and UNMC, calling the regulations “immoral” intrusions on parental rights and even comparing them to forms of oppression such as slavery.

Governor Ron DeSantis has consistently supported Ladapo and doubled down by introducing a “Make America Healthy Again” commission. The group aims to promote “medical freedom,” encourage informed consent, and reconsider long-standing health protocols. Their stance aligns with federal Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., another critic of vaccine mandates, showing that this movement extends beyond Florida.

Medical professionals, however, are issuing strong warnings. Dr. Rana Alissa of the American Academy of Pediatrics stressed that vaccines help protect schools and communities. Dr. Sandra Adamson Fryhofer of the American Medical Association cautioned that reversing mandates could erase decades of progress. Infectious Diseases Society of America president Dr. Tina Tan called the plan “really devastating news” and warned of possible “multiple outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.”

Political leaders echoed those concerns. Orlando mayoral candidate Representative Anna Eskamani described the proposal as “reckless and dangerous,” predicting a rise in preventable illnesses. Representative Lois Frankel pointed out the dangers of mixing unvaccinated groups in schools, retirement communities, and major tourist destinations like Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort.

The World Health Organization reports that vaccines have saved more than 154 million lives over the past half-century, the majority of them children. If diseases such as polio or measles were to return, Florida’s high-volume tourist attractions could face serious challenges—not just in terms of public health but also in maintaining a smooth guest experience.

Meanwhile, states along the West Coast have responded differently. California, Oregon, and Washington have formed the West Coast Health Alliance, a coalition meant to safeguard evidence-based vaccine policies and keep politics out of public health decisions. This divide in state approaches may complicate matters for families traveling across the country, especially in Orlando, where millions of domestic and international guests converge each year.

The proposal has also raised concerns about how schools, cruise ports, and workplaces will adapt if vaccine requirements vanish entirely. For Central Florida’s theme parks, which depend heavily on tourism, the policy could shape both visitor safety and the long-term outlook for the industry.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.

  1. Just because the mandate is gone doesn’t mean people still can’t get them. I swear, people complain the government is too involved so the eliminate mandates then people cry about it. It should not be the governments job to tell us how to live and act, that responsibility is up to use. I will still vaccinate my kids with vaccines that have been tested properly and continue to refuse to be a guinea pig, that is our right.

  2. Definitely not traveling to Florida any more. But the unvaccinated idiots will be traveling all over this country and other countries. The world will become an extreme health risk to everyone.

  3. People act as if there isn’t already millions of people who have decided to not get vaccinations and also have lied to school officials in order to get their to unvaccinated kids into school!
Every country has their groups of people who get vaccinated and those who elect not to get vaccinated.
Those 🤡🤡🤡🤡 saying they won’t be traveling to Florida anymore aren’t going to make a dent in Florida’s tourism rate. Go ahead and avoid it, maybe the Disney parks won’t be as crowded! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  4. I live in England and we’ve been to WDW 30 times in 23 years, Anaheim once and DLP once. We love it. As a nurse in children’s infectious diseases I’ve cared for many children with all the childhood diseases. If the parents could have seen how poorly unvaccinated children can be when they contract one of them, they wouldn’t hesitate to get their kids protected. Children can be left with lifelong health issues like asthma, deafness, blindness, brain damage, and even death if they’re not vaccinated against these illnesses. They can spend weeks in hospital and it can take a long time for them to fully recover. My sister in law contracted polio when she was 5. She spent 5 months in an iron lung and was in hospital for 2 years in all. She had surgery to try to improve her condition but she was left muscle wastage and the complete loss of use in her left arm and hand. She’s now in her 70’s and is suffering from “post polio syndrome “ (PPS) . She’s losing her mobility, her limbs swell, she can’t lift anything heavier than a cup of coffee, she can’t hold things, can’t dress herself and has to use a wheelchair when she goes out. So please tell me, why wouldn’t you want to vaccinate your kids? Would you rather they suffer the consequences of these infections? Both of ours got all their vaccinations and so have our grandchildren. I wouldn’t want any of our family to go through anything they don’t have to!!!

  5. I do not understand how this makes traveling to FL unsafe. I guess people still do not realize that the experimental MRNA vaccine killed more people then it supposably protected. Go ahead, vax up, it the vax you receive works then you will be safe. But if you feal unsafe that others may not be vaxed, then you have no faith in the vaccine you received. So in essence you admit your vaccine is not effective.

  6. Measles, mumps and rubella have been eradicated in the United States since vaccines.
    How stupid is this!!
I am a Registered Nurse. GET REAL!!
    Stop the stupidity!
    WE NEED THESE. VACCINES!!!!!!
