Seven years after one of EPCOT's most famous nighttime traditions disappeared, Disney World may be considering bringing it back.
The park currently ends its evenings with Luminous The Symphony of Us, which has entertained guests around World Showcase Lagoon since 2023.
However, Luminous may not have the lengthy future that some guests expected when Disney introduced it.
Recent rumblings suggest Disney is considering another major change to EPCOT's nighttime entertainment. This time, the company may not need to create an entirely new spectacular to replace its current offering.
Instead, Disney could turn to its own history.
IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, which ran at EPCOT for 20 years, is rumored to be under consideration for a return.
EPCOT Once Had the Same Show for 20 Years
For longtime Disney World visitors, EPCOT's current stretch of changing nighttime spectaculars is very different from what they experienced for much of the park's history.
IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth debuted in 1999.
It didn't disappear after a few years or get replaced as part of a short entertainment cycle. The spectacular remained at EPCOT until 2019.
Over those 20 years, IllumiNations became closely tied to the experience of visiting World Showcase.
The show combined fireworks with lasers, water effects, and an enormous rotating globe positioned on World Showcase Lagoon.
Rather than simply providing a fireworks finale, IllumiNations used the lagoon and surrounding World Showcase environment to create an experience guests could watch from numerous countries around the park.
After two decades, Disney finally retired it in 2019.
EPCOT's nighttime lineup hasn't remained nearly as consistent since then.
Disney Eventually Landed on Luminous
Following the departure of IllumiNations, EPCOT entered a period of significant change.
EPCOT Forever and Harmonious served as interim nighttime shows, giving Disney another production for World Showcase Lagoon while the park moved toward its next chapter.
Eventually, Luminous The Symphony of Us debuted in 2023.
That appeared to give EPCOT its latest permanent nighttime spectacular.
But three years later, questions are emerging about how permanent Luminous will actually be.
Rumblings over the last several weeks suggest Disney could be evaluating whether to retire the current production.
More surprisingly, the potential replacement isn't necessarily another brand-new show.
IllumiNations could be making its way back into the conversation.
Disney Could Resurrect IllumiNations
The possibility of IllumiNations returning would represent a major change in Disney's approach to EPCOT after dark.
It would also give the company an opportunity to capitalize on an experience that already has decades of history with Disney World guests.
IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth lasted 20 years for a reason.
Its combination of fireworks, lasers, water effects, music, and the rotating globe made it immediately recognizable. Its longevity also allowed the spectacular to become part of the EPCOT experience for multiple generations of visitors.
That history would make its return a major moment.
However, there are still plenty of unanswered questions.
Disney hasn't revealed whether discussions about IllumiNations involve restoring the original production, developing an updated version, or simply taking inspiration from the former spectacular.
In fact, Disney hasn't publicly confirmed that those discussions are happening at all.
For now, this remains a rumor.
D23 Is Suddenly Much More Interesting
Disney fans may not have to wait too long before getting a better idea of what the company has planned.
D23 is scheduled for August 14-16, 2026.
With the event approaching, attention will naturally turn toward what Disney could reveal about the future of its theme parks.
A major EPCOT nighttime announcement would certainly fit into that conversation.
If Disney intends to end Luminous and revive IllumiNations, D23 could give the company an opportunity to reveal those plans to fans.
Of course, the approaching event doesn't guarantee anything.
Disney could hold D23 without mentioning EPCOT's nighttime spectacular at all.
The company could also have discussions underway without being ready to announce a final decision.
Until Disney confirms something, guests shouldn't plan their vacations around an IllumiNations return or assume Luminous is about to disappear.
Josh D'Amaro Could Take Disney in Another Direction
The rumors also arrive during an important period for Disney leadership.
Josh D'Amaro is now CEO of Disney, giving him a major voice in decisions that could shape the company's theme parks in the years ahead.
That matters because a project being considered internally doesn't mean it will ultimately happen.
Disney routinely develops ideas that change before the public ever sees them. Budgets, timelines, creative decisions, and broader company priorities can all affect whether a proposed project moves forward.
The same caution applies here.
There may be legitimate reasons to believe Disney is considering a return to IllumiNations, but that doesn't guarantee D'Amaro and Disney leadership will ultimately approve such a move.
Luminous remains EPCOT's official nighttime spectacular.
Disney hasn't announced its retirement or given guests a final date to see it.
World Showcase Lagoon Could Look Familiar Again
Still, the possibility is difficult to ignore.
IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth spent 20 years at EPCOT before Disney retired it in 2019. Few nighttime experiences have remained so closely connected to a Disney park for that long.
Now, seven years after its final performance, its name is back in the conversation.
If Disney follows through, the company could replace a three-year-old nighttime spectacular with a revival of one that lasted two decades.
That's a dramatic change, especially considering how much EPCOT itself has evolved since IllumiNations disappeared.
For now, guests will continue gathering around World Showcase Lagoon for Luminous The Symphony of Us.
The bigger question is what they'll be gathering to watch in the future.
D23 runs August 14-16, and Disney could have the perfect opportunity to provide an answer.
