Disney has confirmed new operational changes set to enhance the guest experience just in time for the summer rush—and perhaps to attract visitors amid heightened competition in Orlando’s theme park scene.
For the first time since 2019, both of Disney’s beloved water parks—Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach—will be open simultaneously. Starting May 21, guests can explore both the tropical paradise of Typhoon Lagoon and the snow-capped slopes of Blizzard Beach, bringing even more variety to their vacation plans.
Before the exciting dual opening, Blizzard Beach will temporarily close on May 1 for a brief refresh, making way for Typhoon Lagoon’s long-awaited return. Since the pandemic, the two water parks have alternated seasons, but this summer marks a shift back to full availability. Guests won’t have to wait long for Blizzard Beach’s grand reopening, ensuring that both water parks will be up and running throughout the warmest months of the year.
Disney Parks Blog confirmed the milestone in an April update: “For the first time since 2019, Disney World will have all 6 of our parks—all 4 theme parks and 2 water parks—open at the same time.” This special window, running from May 21 through September 7, offers even more options for guests looking to beat the heat.
May 21 also carries significance for the theme park industry, as it falls just one day before Universal Orlando Resort welcomes visitors to its newest expansion, Universal Epic Universe. With crowds expected to flood Central Florida, Disney’s decision to reopen both water parks at once could help manage attendance across its resort while enticing travelers to extend their Disney stay.
In addition to the water parks’ expanded availability, Disney has confirmed the return of an after-dark fan-favorite event at Typhoon Lagoon. “Let’s glow! Disney H2O Glow After Hours is returning with fun for the whole family on select nights this summer,” Disney Water Parks’ official Instagram account announced.
Running from May 23 through September 13, this separately ticketed event includes three hours of exclusive nighttime access, complimentary treats like ice cream novelties, popcorn, and select beverages, as well as reduced wait times at attractions like Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool and Castaway Creek. Guests can also dance the night away at a high-energy DJ party and meet rarely seen Disney characters.
To accommodate summer visitors, Disney has also extended operating hours for both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Beginning June 1, the water parks will remain open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., an hour longer than the current season schedule. Additionally, Disney resort hotel guests will continue to enjoy complimentary water park admission on their check-in day, making access to these refreshing escapes even easier.
Meanwhile, Blizzard Beach has been making a splash of its own with a major milestone. On April 1, the water park kicked off its 30th-anniversary festivities with special entertainment and interactive experiences. “Just imagine a high-energy DJ spinning some toe-tapping tunes on the deck near the Polar Pub,” Disney Parks Blog shared.
“And fun interactions with Mickey and Minnie decked out in their winter attire. There’s even going to be snowman bowling and character-themed tubes for floating down Cross Country Creek.”
While this celebration will be short-lived—Blizzard Beach is set to close at the end of April—the summer season ahead promises plenty of aquatic fun with both water parks welcoming guests together for the first time in years. However, this expansion does come with potential challenges.
Florida’s unpredictable weather has historically caused unexpected water park closures, particularly during the colder months. Earlier this year, Blizzard Beach faced multiple shutdowns due to lingering cold fronts. Now, with both water parks operating at once, guests may need to adjust their plans if inclement weather leads to last-minute disruptions. This could drive higher attendance at Disney’s four theme parks, shifting crowd patterns throughout the resort.
According to Click Orlando, another cold front is already forming as summer approaches, serving as a reminder for travelers to stay flexible with their itineraries. With hurricane season also on the horizon, guests are encouraged to consider alternative activities to ensure their Disney vacation stays magical, rain or shine.
